I'm from Wisconsin so believe me when I say I can dress for cold weather. But living down in Mississippi where the summer temps get well into the 's for months on end, and given that my scooter was broken in during those summertime temps, she doesn't like the cold at all. For starters, I don't like the way that auto choke thingy revs the engine when she's first started in the morning when it's cold out. In the summer it's fine but when it's 30 degrees, well, that's a different matter. I don't think a cold engine should be reeved that high until the choke lets go. At least not on a single-cylinder 150cc anyway. And when the choke comes off I have to give it some gas for a minute or two until it idles on it's own. Then it takes a few miles for the entire bike to get warmed up. The variator is stiff, the belt is stiff, the wheel bearings are stiff, everything is stiff and doesn't like the cold one bit. I don't think it's a good idea to subject my cheap little Chinese Scooter to that type of stress and strain so I've decided I'm not going to start her up anymore unless the temps are above 40 degrees. She doesn't seem to mind those temps too much and, ok, I'll admit it. I'm getting too frickin' old for those temps too. Maybe I'm just getting soft to cold temps living down here. Betsy Mae is just a Scooter. She's not a rock. And neither am I. My two cents worth...

I'm starting to question the wisdom of riding my BMS Heritage 150cc when it's this cold. I took her to work the other day when it was 35 degrees and she was rather sluggish for the first few miles until things got warmed up. I'm assuming the CVT was pretty stiff and was reluctant to work properly in the cold.
I was thinking maybe trying to warm that up too by reving the engine on it's stand and open and close the CVT a few times to loosen it up. Thoughts on this?

I'm from Wisconsin (Fond du Lac) so I feel your pain about winter life there. But living in Mississippi now I should be able to ride most, if not all, of the winter here. So far this month I've riden to work in the upper 30's a few times but generally it's been nice. Especially on the way home. Gorgeous riding weather actually.
The next long period of rain or ice or whatever we get down here that prevents me from riding I plan on bringing Betsy Mae into the shop and giving her a good going over and thorough cleaning. She has 2,200 miles on her and I want to check the condition of the CVT and clutch and belt and whatever else I can find in there. I'll take whatever plastic I can get off too and have a good look at where I can't normally see and clean and check all that over too. I'm a firm believer in preventative maintenance. She's treated me good so far. It's time she gets a little pampering.
PS- GO PACK GO!

35 degrees and a 9 mph wind out of the north. A fine day to take a ride to see how my cold weather gear holds up. The Carhart Bibs and Coat were excellent against the wind. I even kept my head warm with a cap under my helmet. But a scarf or a pull-over with a collar is in order because the wind whistled around my neck. Brrr. And the wind got through my gloves as well. Cold hands. And I'll definitely need to wear boots instead of tennis shoes. Cold feet. As a side note- I let my Scoot warm up a little longer because of the temperature but even still it ran a little rough until I rode a couple of miles. It even missed a spark (I think) a time or two but that straightened right up after a bit. I'm guessing also that the CVT was a little stiff and cranky from the cold but that too smoothed out after the first mile. Like me first thing on a cold morning, I'm a little slow to get my blood pumping. I just took it easy on her and all was well fairly quickly. Another thing I noticed was that after letting her sit for about a half hour I think the Enricher reset already because when I started her up after that half hour she revved pretty high for about thirty seconds. So much so that the back wheel was spinning at a pretty good clip. I wish there was a way of turning off the enricher. Anyway, my first experience at a cold ride. The old gal at Walgreens said to me "It's not cold if you love to ride". I love it!

I didn't do anything to my scoot either when it first arrived. Well, I pushed and pulled and banged on it a little to check for loose things and rattles. Didn't find any. So I just rode it and changed the oil at the recommended 300 miles. I stay in-tune with the bike listening and feeling for things when I'm riding it. Anything different with the feel or sounds it makes and I'm all over it. 2,100 miles so far and running like a dream...

I had a similar issue when my scooter was brand new in March of this year. I figured out that the float bowl was running dry when I ran at WOT. So I just never ran at WOT and I never had the problem. But now that I have just over 2,000 miles on it I can run at WOT all day and it runs just fine. It just needed to get broke in I think and gain some "wiggle room".

When I got my scooter back in early March it has been my main mode of transportation, as long as there isn't rain in the forecast. Now we're well into October and it's getting chilly again, Thank God! (It's frickin' hot in northern Mississippi in the summer-for this Yankee anyway). A month ago a found a deal on a pair of Carhart coveralls (which will go nicely with my Carhart jacket) so I bought them in anticipation of the approaching winter because I plan on using my main mode of transportation year 'round. I really don't have to worry about it getting below freezing down here until late December and into January but for the most part it will remain above freezing all winter long. So if it doesn't snow or freezing rain I'll be riding "Betsy Mae" throughout the winter months. I was just wondering what part of the country, or world, y'all are from and how long into the winter you'll be riding barring any foul weather. I'd like to get a trunk sticker that reads "Global warming is not my fault".

My car is 26 years old, has just over 200,000 miles on it, and gets 20 MPG. I make a trip to Wisconsin twice a year and cover 1,500 miles and given my cars’ age and miles I wanted to save what life she has left in her for my trips home. So I was in the market for alternate transportation for my daily commute. I wasn’t even thinking about a scooter but somehow stumbled upon them while checking out vehicles on-line.
I had a Honda Express in my youth and remember how much fun it was to ride and it also made economical and environmental sense to get a scooter. I don’t do much driving aside from going to work and living in northern Mississippi I could ride it all year long. And at an average 74 MPG I’m making a difference with my carbon footprint.
I’ve always been the kind of guy that went around turning off lights, etc. doing my part to save as much as the earths limited precious natural resources as possible. Or at least not waste them fragrantly. So getting a scooter made sense, and I got one.
I’ve been using this site since March of this year (2014) because of some initial bugs that came with my new scooter, to which the help was invaluable. Thank you! But now I’d like to pose the question as to why you bought your scooter.
I tend to stick to the thread that most pertains to my machine (150 cc air cooled) and I read quite a bit about folks modifying their machines by removing the emission control system, or wanting to get more power from their engine, and so forth, all of which, in my opinion, would lower the MPG and defeat the purpose of getting the most they could out of a gallon of gas.
I kept my machine like it was when I got it. Stock. I now have 1,800 miles on it and she gets 74 MPG. She has a little more get-up-and-go now that its well broke in and the last tank of gas I put her to the test and ran her hard to see what her limits were. That riding hard- fast off the mark, and topping her rpms and speed, lowered my mileage by 16 MPG. I’ll not be doing that again!
So I was just wondering why you bought your scooter. Just because it’s a fun ride? Because it was cheap and all you could afford? To lower your carbon footprint like me? Or maybe some other reason? And also, for what purpose did you modify it? Just for curiosity sake- Thanks…

It's been 270 miles so I changed my oil. It's still pretty dark but there's a little color left. So now I know.

Maybe all the fuel in the carb float chamber drained into the cylinder and it's flooded? My head rattles too.
