I changed my oil for the first time at 300 miles, like was recommended. It then said every 1,000 miles thereafter. I decided to make it easy and change it when it hit 1,000 miles, which makes 700 miles since I changed the oil last.
What I drained was black oil. It was a nice golden color when I put it in. Yamalube 10W40. Is it normal that the oil be black as the ace of spades after 700 miles?

Black is most often an indication of extreme heat, and means the oil has lost most of it's properties by then. I would recommend more frequent oil changes, especially during the summer. I live in Vegas, so I change every 250-300 miles during the summer, every 500 during the winter. Costs me about $3 each time, and 10 minutes, and is well worth it IMHO.
Black can also be an indication of bad rings, but there would be other indications of this (poor engine performance, ect).

Yes great advice , never wait 1000 miles to change the oil . Remember it only holds less then a quart so change atleast every 500 miles I change mine every 300 miles .

I am assuming you mostly ride WOT, as well as ride in hot climate areas, so your oil will take more strain. As suggested, I would recommend changing oil sooner, at 500 miles. Although to soon now, I suggest eventually changing to a synthetic oil in the higher heat range when you hit around 2500 - 3000 miles.

I can't run at WOT, for very long anyway because my float chamber runs dry, but I do run at 45 mph as that is the speed limit on the roads that I drive on. And being that I live in North Mississippi it's quite hot here. + in the summer. But now that I know I'll be changing it sooner. I should have known better as I would never have let my cars' oil get that dark. I'll be keeping a closer eye on it from now on. Live and learn. Thanks for the heads-up (ya'll).

W42 , try putting on a larger fuel filter , I had the same prolbem and since I changed mine not a prolbem now , the stock ones work ok but are too small to hold enough gas to fill the bowl when needed

It's been 270 miles so I changed my oil. It's still pretty dark but there's a little color left. So now I know.

Remember the GY6 has no real oil filter just a course screen so its every 500 miles at least in the summer. To go 1,000 miles and more between oil changes you really need a cleaner running engine with a full flow oil filter.
