Yea, a scooter is a scooter, and if made proper and priced for the cost of the scooter, and not inflated cause of the name, yea, I'd buy one. ^^^^^^this^^^^^ Cause you know that anything Harley written on it just gets price jumped. Lets face it, riding a scooter could only be more fun if they had roundels on the side, browning machine guns in the front and you're chasing a squirrelly German! Ian

I honestly want my next motorcycle to be a Harley. As afr as not being dependable, why don't people ever talk about how the old English bikes would always drip all over the place. Then again don't we all hear the "Chinese scooters are junk" comments?
There may be a thread of truth to all the complaints about chinese and Harley's but people will get what they want and what they can afford.

My Dad would have slapped me upside the head for going with Harley instead of an Indian like he used to ride.
My Lance was called a Piglett by the Harley Crowd. I wonder if they would call a scooter made by Indian a Squaw.
After following behind my Aprilia Sport City on a winding road the Harley crowd only wants to know how much does it cost and where can they get one.

I used to own an ' Sportster I bought new. From the 'git go' the signals were backwards...left was right etc. How they missed that during the PDI is beyond me. It did leak a bit of oil. They replaced the seals under warranty and it never leaked again. So I assume that when they sit in a warehouse for long periods waiting to be sold to dealers....they dry rot a bit? Not sure. Loved the bike was conned into selling it by the new wife because she said we could not afford the payments. We could..but in reality she feared motorcycles...being the bottom line. When I joined the military in 1982 I owned a Harley Legerro. Like the foolish kid I was I sold it before going in. They were Italian made and high quality...also you could really hype them up with Wiseco and Boyssen parts. Wish they would make them again.. Attachments:

I have been thinking about this for a long time and someone beat me to posting it . I was watching American Restoration on History and saw Harley made 2T mopeds with 3 speed twist shift and thought it was super cool . Imagine going to Sturgis on it LOL . If Harley made a scooter it should have a V twin engine and of course a loud exhaust www.mopedarmy.com has some pictures in the gallery section of the Harleys and many other vintage rides too

I wouldn't buy an HD scooter. It would probably be over priced, under powered and ridiculously expensive to modify.

Back in '60's-'70's there was a surge of motorcycle/motorscooter. H-D rebadged small motorcycles and scooters. Lost money.
Currently, Harley-Davidson sells more than 50% of all 1000cc cruiser motorcycles. *ALL* other manufacturers combined sell less than 50%. H-D makes money building and selling big cruisers. Why would they want to lose money selling little scooters?
I was down to the Harley Dealer for parts for my Savage, come out and 3-4 people admiring my scooter. It is a lightweight 652cc single cylinder motor, just 380 pounds wet. It is roughly the same as the little 883 Sportster, 'cept the Sportster is over 550 pounds wet and has two cylinders. There are not enough people wanting a Thumper for H-D to engineer and produce, let alone a little scooter.
H-D is not going to produce a scooter. I would not buy a scooter at the H-D dealer.
I needed a replacement for my dead Savage. Wanted a lightweight city bike, tested the Vespa LX150 and found that it can do freeways, so I bought one.
I am in Gardena. My nearest Vespa Dealer is Honda of Santa Monica, about 12 miles away. They sell and service Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, and Piaggio/Vespa. Their mechanics work on motorcycles, and also scooters, at times, rarely.
I bought from Vespa of Sherman Oaks, about 26 miles away. For service I go and will contiue go to Vespa of Sherman Oaks because they only sell and service Piaggio vehicles. They know what they are doing. I do not want a motorcycle mechanic working on my motorscooter.

I guess I AM a Harley guy... Oh YEAH, and THEN some...
But if they DID make a scooter TODAY, I'd bet the farm it would be made in China... For me, it would HAVE to be genuine "Milwaukee Iron"... Not likely though. And it would surely be overpriced.
If I ever miraculously got my health and money back, I'd probably again ride a Harley. BUT... It would be a handmade masterpiece comprised of mostly all original PRE-AMF bits and pieces. My preference, a stroker knucle-head with thirties springer-fork and full-rat all the way. And I would live with any leaks... Now cut me some slack here, I'm pushing 70 and remember those great old Hogs all too well. Gotta love 'em if you're from THAT era... LOL!

They can't manufacture and sell scooters for anything considered reasonable prices. Union costs and pension costs pretty much force them to sell only big iron nowadays. Worse they would have to compete with the cheap Chinese imports too. So they just will not do it. A HD branded 80cc scooter would probably sell for $5000. If they actually tried to make it.
The last big thing HD did was buy Buell out and then they quickly discontinued it as they couldn't make and sell the bikes like Buell did for those prices.
Years ago HD tried importing cheaper bikes made in Italy and that worked for a while. But they couldn't compete with the Japanese after a while and they gave up the smaller bike market to the Japanese.
The scooter market tends to follow the gasoline price fluctuations. When gas prices go up higher, people get interested in scooters. When the gas prices go down people lose interest in scooters. So it pretty much kills the market to sell scooters. You can look and see the limited offerings from the Japanese manufacturers to see that they don't see much of a market selling scooters.

The question too ask is if Harley made a airplane would you fly in it ? One yr the girlfriend and myself were headed to Sturgis , I had my wing pulling the wagon and she was riding her Shadow , we came up behind 2 guys on their Harleys also holiday packed I would think also heading to Sturgis . There was not way on earth they were going to be passed by a Jap , so they rolled on it , well so did we , we were running about 115 mph with me on my horn right behind them , it did not take but a couple of miles before one guys bike start blowing smoke out of one pipe , he motioned to his buddy to pull over . He know his sturgis holiday was now a dream , but on the good news side they had not made it out of Canada yet so home was fairly close . Oh yes we beeped and waved as we went by . Ah Sturgis the only place in the world were you can ride any make of bike around town dragging a magnet and collect enough parts to build your own Harley

I had Harleys,, They are over rated,,granted they sound good when they idle,,but for me,,I would never buy another junk Harley,,your better off strapping two 10 hp briggs to a frame,,a huge percentage of your money goes into building their fancy buildings and extravagant showrooms,,,no thanks,,too big for their britches. Now a Honda is a different story,,we all know they are the best

I would buy a modern Harley scooter. However, the scooter market is super competitive these days (ask Aprilia), so I would be shocked if they produced one. I liked the Toppers because they had much larger diameter wheels than the Cushmans.

The original motorcycles had external valve trains and oil flew all over the place since that was just the way they were. That's where Harley came from so yes the old ones leaked. Still would go for an Indian Chief myself if I was inclined to get a big cruiser. Maybe something with a Ridley automatic drive because of my bad leg.
