The original motorcycles had external valve trains and oil flew all over the place since that was just the way they were. That's where Harley came from so yes the old ones leaked. Still would go for an Indian Chief myself if I was inclined to get a big cruiser. Maybe something with a Ridley automatic drive because of my bad leg. We have a museum called Space Farms pretty close to me,,I like to go for a ride and see all the old bikes and motorcycles,,they have stuff from early 1900's and up,,so cool to look at that stuff ... www.spacefarms.com/gallery-exhibits.html |

Harley DID make a scooter... The "Topper" back in the sixties.
I didn't buy one. I wanted a Harley... a REAL Harley and built an extra-nasty one... LOL! I also loved scooters back then, but... a SCOOTER just had to be a Cushman, or Vespa or Lambretta... Unless you could find an elusive "Mustang". Just the way it was.
Harley NOW has a huge factory in INDIA... They're making many models, including a small-engine Sportster-style V-Twin if the articles about them are right. A 250 or 500 class REAL Harley V-Twin would be quite appealing today... And, it it's made in India, is it also a REAL "Indian"? Enquiring minds want to know...
I guess they COULD name it "Maharaja" or "Sabu" or maybe "Karma" in lieu of "Chief" or "Warrior" or such... LOL!
Let's face it... IF it has a V-Twin motor, and IF it goes "potato, potato, potato" at idle, and IF it says "Harley-Davidson" on the tank, SOMEBODY will pay double what it's worth. Always have, always will...

So people even say Harleys don't leak oil anymore . 1990 was the 50th anniversary of the Sturgis rally ,1/2 million bikes showed up , it was a good year but what blew me away is main street go so slick with oil that every night they sprayed the street with VHT .VHT for those that have never run a car at a drag strip is what they use on the starting line for traction .its like trying to walk on honey , ya right they don't leak . But if I had to ride a Harley there is only one I would ever want to own , google Smitty's rat bike .it is cool and have chatted with him many times as the girlfriend hung more stuff on his bike

Hildo has the classic Rat Bike/Franken Bike and is an Icon of sorts among Harley riders around the world. This is a classic that tickles me every time I watch it even though I am not a big Harley fan.

Funny video but faked , gives the HD crowd some hope I guess , and if that German guy thinks that his is a rat bike he needs to go back to school , its a old used up chopper .not one piece of stuff hanging on his bike , sure it's old , it's dirt but that does not make a rat bike . I see now why after Smitty won another rat bike contest they shipped his bike to Germany for a contest , I never heard how he did there and I am guessing this guy in the video missed the show also . I guess I will take my honda cub clone and race the newest kawabunga deathstar 9000 and post the video of my win LOL

Lets see by the book a rat bike are: "Motorcycles that have fallen apart over time but been kept on the road and maintained for little or no cost by employing kludge fixes."
So that cobbled up Evo, Shovel Head Chopper without a working front brake the Hollander put together with mismatched heads, jugs and intake parts should qualify. (Video was scrutinized by a bike mechanic I work with and he had quite a laundry list of what was mismatched on the engine and intake saying that the plumbing was "interesting" to say the least)
It is entertaining.

Rocky great video but let me ride that crotch rocket and the it would have a different outcome . In the book " Scooters For Idiots " it said HD was the first to use plastic and fiberglass on a scooter as Vespa and Cushmans were metal bodies . To my knowledge they were 2Ts . I would love to see a HD scooter with a v twin 50 or 100cc thumper |

We have in the US the worlds #1 maker of racing engines yet we don't have a single company here making a scooter using those Briggs and Straton engines. A scooter based on the VTwin Vanguard engines might be nice as would something using the Raptors..

Yes the video is complete staged poop in my eyes, I rode street bikes for a long time and the front forks do not even move when he launches, also he is not revved up and he started in first gear.
Launch the bike in 2nd, its a 1000. Next you are stock forked and that bike always separates over 2" on any launch. and really you went less then a 8th mile and where already stopped.....
I am interested in the electric Harley, not that I would ever buy it but come on has to be interesting to see a big heavy pull up not making a sound, less the whining that comes from the motor....

With a electric HD you might have to return to your childhood and put a baseball card in the spokes like we did with are bicycles
