Lost track of this thread / progression for a while, just caught back up, was very interested in this bike from the day you announced you'd be ordering it, prodigit. Seems to be coming along nicely. About what I expected as far as the level of quirks to work out but for the price and especially the performance you describe, incredible. Don't get me wrong, not enough to reconsider my beast of a European pedigree 49cc 2T, especially with the planned BBK... but I might just have to pick one of these up after I give away my ATM50 if I can still get that same price. I'm trying to use the ATM50 some still to keep the miles off the Derbi and save on gas, not having much fun doing it though haha

My 2003 Derbi GP1 49cc has 2250 miles on her now, had only 1578 when I bought it a couple months ago. The original owner only put ~850 miles on it from 2003-2011, he was an older guy and it was pent up in a garage for quite a while. I probably will have put as many miles on her in my first 4-6 months as her first 10 years!!! She's liking the work out so far.

Burning oil, not good. Sounds like you'll have to tear it down and try again. I would check the rings as mentioned - gap, positioning/offset, the order they go in, how they're seated on the piston...

DX I've got a 4T and a 2T, the 2T is a much more expensive and higher quality brand though (2T is a Derbi vs 4T Tao Tao). The performance is comparable on both scooters but with the Derbi having a significantly higher top speed / gear ratio. The Tao Tao has an 83cc BBK and many mods though, the Derbi weighs at least 50 lbs more and is bone stock. Only downside is very poor fuel economy, I average around 55-60mpg on the 2T 49cc and probably 75-80 on the 4T 83cc BBK. Oil shouldn't be a concern, my 2T consumes it at about the same rate as some of the older cars I've owned, and actually with the frequency of oil changes on 4T scooters it's about the same there too.... but 2T oil is much more expensive than 4T. No mixing, my scooter as well as all the 2T's I've seen are oil injection and take care of that for you.

Felt conflicted about posting this and i hope it doesn't bother anyone. But this happened in an area i ride in sometimes but seems to have been a whirlwind of every worst case possible scenario. My best friend vaguely knew one of the deceased. m.wral.com/w/news-top/story/92963466/Summarizing this report it appears that at 3 am last night two men were on a scooter going 53 in a 35 when they collided head on with a police car traveling 77 mph without it's blue lights activated. Apparently alcohol may have been a factor and the scooter may have been stolen so it's hard to have much sympathy. But what struck me the strangest is the scene versus the description. Says the scooter crossed the centerline but it struck the right side of the car and at the scene the car is completely over the centerline. I certainly pin this one on the rider given all those circumstances but i think the officer still has some explaining to do.....

Well, that CDI i was going nuts about bit the dust yesterday. Luckily not while i was riding but i wasted a few minutes messing with wiring till i swapped the cdi back to stock and boom fired right up. Oh well i didn't pay much or anything for it. Performance difference not discernable back on stock cdi but i am running extra base gasket / lower compression now.

Right around 7k km on my older ATM50. 83cc bbk the last 900 km. Original motor still ran decently when installed. Now swapped a long case on it and hope to get at least 5k km before any major work. i ride that scoot WOT % of the time. Only problems have been turn signals shot, belt broke, exhaust came loose, and ignition switch broke. All cheap and easy fixes except the turn signals seem to be a wiring issue but i don't really need them. My Chinese scooters have impressed me although i still feel a little better on my Derbi.

So long story short i put my 83cc bbk on a long cas e and swapped it onto my Tao Tao. So far were loving the ride on 12"s instead of 10"s. Anyways my problem is with the rear shock. I understand the preferred method is relocating the bracket but that doesn't interest me. I measured the long cases shock to be shorter but it was too rusted and old to use safely. The swing arms geometry is slighly off and i was wondering are there really shocks for these that are in shorter or adjustable height?

[replyingto=dragonsparks]dragonsparks[/replyingto]I was very fortunate when i got hit on my motorcycle that the closest witness stopped and waited for police to give a statement. Otherwise i may not have faired so well with her insurance company and could have been out thousands. However when i see an accident if there are people closer or already stopping it makes no sense to stop and potentially cause more confusion and congestion for first responders

It depends on a lot of factors, terrain, engine power/tuning, rider weight, etc. I found around 4-4.5g was the best for me on my Tao Tao.

Indeed, this storm system is far from over, although the worst of the tornado threat has passed.
It's just incredible to witness the power of mother nature at it's worst, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas are surely in the thick of it most the time. It's such a volatile area with all that heat and moisture, anytime the jetstream winds curl just right, you have some massive storms. Although this had been one of the least active years for tornadoes up until about a week ago, I'm afraid the increasing occurrence and violence of these natural disasters lately is only going to get worse with climate change...

Depending on how and when the rain breaks through today, I'll be right on your coat tails with the next one ;D

That black circle is the radar echoes dropping out from hitting solid objects, so yeah, it's literally all the debris getting thrown up into the vortex around the tornado. On the live helicopter shots it was hard to see the actual tornado since there was so much debris wrapped around it. I thought I heard that some debris was lifted so high into the supercell that the storm carried it like miles away.
