Probably more than 50000 scooters in Indiana. Consider that according to the Indiana BMV there are over 500000 suspended drivers licenses in the state. That's about 10% of the states population.

It does happen gradually even though it seemed suddenly. They have been going out of adjustment from mile one actually. It is the result of the valves seating into the cylinder head. As miles add up the valves finish seating in and the need for adjustment tends to decrease in frequency. Regular oil changes with good oil is also helpful in this regard. Note that valve adjustment is likely the culprit but there can be other issues such as CDI timing. I even know of a cracked piston that happened and drove us insane trying to diagnose. Basically check the most likely things first.

Old stale gas is bad. I wouldn't even put it in a lawnmower. In days of old when there was real gas it lasted longer. Now days the ethanol blends are notorious for moisture retention

Yep thats how to do it. Valve adjustment is considered routine maintenance for the qmb chinese scooter engine.

It made it to 25000 kms. until I got rear ended by a car which destroyed it completely. It was still running fine at the time. Nothing was salvageable from the remains of the scooter. I was fortunately uninjured .

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Likely the valves are to tight. This will require tools to remedy. A feeler gage and a 9 millimeter box end wrench to set the valve lash at .003" or maybe a little more. Each scooter likes its valve lash set differently it seems.

I have a 2010 Tao Tao CYT3 50 scooter that I bought new in the crate. It has over 20000 kms on it. My question is how long will these things last? I have went thru 2 sets of tires,3 drive belts,1 set of variator rollers plus the routine maintenance. I plan on running it until it wears out beyond economical repair. Then I will get another one.

The more often the oil changed the better.

Use a nut splitter tool to get it off.

Also a new belt is a good idea,at 4200 miles,it may be worn as well. It might be stretched, missing a chunk and flapping around making noise too.

Yes,because the roller weight guide channels in the variator are alumimum, and can also wear ,increasing tolerances, making more noise. Also bonus is increased performance with a new variator. Make sure to measure your current variator roller weights before geting new ones. Lighter weights = more engine revs. Heavier weights = less engine revs.

I had one a long time ago as a kid. 25 mph is about as fast as they will go,being a single speed drive train.
