hey all I'm new to the forums but have been a long time lurker when it was over at the dawgs. I purchased a Jonway YY150T-5 scooter for my wife and have got it up and running in tip top shape. I currently went to get insurance on it and they can not find that specific model even existing. It's a good 'ole vespa copy but I've scoured google and turn up zilch. I've found all the "T" lines but it skips from 4 to 6. No problems with the scooter at all, don't know if they got some kind of "stop making a vespa copy" letter or the brand just no longer supports it. I know several other companies have the same scooter under a different name but trying to get insurance on this model has proven more than difficult. Anyone have any idea on why it doesn't show up at all or is my luck just that bad?

howdy, just experience and nothing else here. mostly it seems that they ask for the serial number and that should be adequate to insure. otherwise can you look the scoot up by the serial number and give that info the the agent? it may be that if you drop any request for repair coverage -- that is opt for liability only that problem would go away?
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Do you have the title and or MCO for it that is all you should need. They have a list of scooters just like cars and apparently yours is not on the list that is all. Happened to me when I bought the ICE BEAR TRIKE back in March of 2009, why because they just brought them into the U.S so they did not have a record of them. They called ICE BEAR and got whatever information they wanted or needed. Alleyoop

thanks for all the quick responses. I called them back and found out they'll insure it with just liability which is fine because if it's totaled I only paid $250 for the scooter so not a huge loss, just making sure who ever is on it has coverage really. Taking care of myself or my wife in an accident is what I want, could care less about them taking care of the scooter.

If it was more valuable you could get around this by asking for an agreed cash value policy and then paying for that amount of coverage to protect you if it is totaled. Does not matter what the bike is worth at the time of loss since you stipulated and payed for a particular dollar amount of coverage. For granted they won't give you a million or 100,000 of coverage but will usually go for a reasonable amount.

anybody know a place in US that insures 50 cc scoots? Not mandatory but it'd be nice to have a policy of some kind that'd replace it if it got totaled. Been a lot of scoot/bike riders get hit by cages lately in my area. Had 2 wrecks involving bikes just over the weekend.

I have Geico insurance, no they didn't have my exact model already in their tables. I just gave them the make, model and displacement and picked out what coverage I wanted.
I got comprehensive and uninsured motorist. The only thing I opted out of was PIP. All told for the above it works out to a little less than a dollar a day. If I had wanted PIP too it would have been almost four times as expensive. I think you should talk to either Progressive or Geico and not some mom and pop type insurance, because they are more familiar with motorcycles in general.

Foremost and Progressive will insure a 50cc . When you go to register your scooter say " I want to register my MOTORCYCLE " not scooter or moped

State Farm wrote me a full coverage agreed value policy for a very reasonable premium on my 2012 Tomos Twister 50 cc scoot.

Deal with an ins agent rather than online forms. I called the agent before I bought the BMS TBX-260. That model was not listed on the insurance sites, but when I spoke to the Geico agent, I sent him the link to the bike, he did the research. It turned out to be a Zhejiang Xingyue 260. This was verified when I received the MCO. I called him when i bought the bike and got full coverage. Many companies just throw their names on the bike, but the first few digits of the serial number will give you the actual manufacturer. Also on the FMVSS plate, it should list the actual manufacturer.
Good Luck
