Guys,
I was wondering if you also use some type of U-lock or any other lock on your scooter? I have a Vino with the wheel/steering column lock that is built in but now I have to park on the street in Chicago while at work and I think I need to add extra security.
If you do use one, which would you recommend a U-lock, disc lock, or a disc lock with an alarm? I can’t do a cable since they are few poles.
Thank you

I have the following; 1. 2 eye bolts 2. 3 small master locks 3/8s lock w 1/8 shank 3. 1 bigger master lock 3/4 lock 1/4 shank 4. 1 3/8s kryptonite braided 6' cable
example; The 2 eye bolts bolted on where the front reflectors go. 2 of the small locks are for helmets. The other small lock is locked to the front brake disc. because, it is harder to get the rear wheel off, I lock up the rear with the cable. You have to unbolt the exhaust to get the tire off.
And, for your question; a. u-locks I think are worthless unless u lock the bike up to something. that goes for any lock alarm or not.
Remember, two guys and truck, gone in less than half-A-minute. Oh yeah, two foot bolt cutters and a hacksaw I'll get through any lock/cable/chain u want to carry. With bolt cutters I can get through 1/2" chain and even my cable. My small locks they are off in three strokes of a hacksaw.
b. As for the wheel steering lock, lol, those things are a joke. Half-A-Second it's broken. Brass locking pin Good! Cast aluminum ignition case Not Good! There really is no way to keep your bike safe enough to put your mind at ease.

I live in apartment complex and my scoot is kept under a carport with 10 parking spaces. I have 2 Brinks cable locks (one through each wheel and around one of the 8" x 8" vertical posts supporting the roof as well s a disc brake caliper lock on the front wheel. If they try to cut down the post the roof should wake up all the neighbors when it lands on 10 cars, one moped and 2 scoots. *LOL* The ultimate security when parked at home is my insurance policy.

It is true that with a simple trailer, your scooter is gone in 30 seconds no matter how you protect it, just do a search on YouTube for "motorcycle stolen" or "scooter stolen". The only way to retrieve it is with a tracker. There are stand alone trackers for over $100 (most are $150 and up), or you can buy a used cellphone off Cragislist or Ebay etc for as little as $30.
There are cheap used Android phones available that can be set up on a $10/month or less data only prepaid plan (one is as cheap as $5/month, but I need to read the fine print before recommending it). The phone doesn't need to be fancy or even the latest version of Android, the cheaper the better for this purpose. If you choose to mount the phone on your dash, you can use it for GPS speedometer or navigation, and a front facing camera could possibly snap a photo or video of the thief with the appropriate app. You could also mount the cellphone under the plastics for a stealthier approach, preventing the possibility the phone itself being stolen with the bike left behind.
I'm currently using my old VirginMobile OptimusV, under the seat till I figure out a secure mounting solution. I'm keeping my eye on Craigslist for a good deal on a phone I can use on one of the carriers that offer cheap data only plans, VirginMobile's cheapest Android plan is $35/month, cheap for a cellphone but expensive for a tracker.

I'm pretty lucky, at work I don't have to worry about it... We have armed security (not mall cops, these guys are homeland security) and they all know who rides the red scoot scoot. If someone else was to ride it thru a check point... ummm well, they would be detained. At 7-eleven, it's parked where I can see it, by the front door, on the sidewalk... At home it's in the garage.
I really do need to get some locks for, but so far so good. It does have full coverage tho.... too bad the deductible is more then I paid for the bike.... (I bought it for 500 bucks)....
I hate that you have to lock up your stuff... I grew up where we left keys in our cars, and didn't worry about it... left the front door unlocked, walked three miles uphill both ways, in the snow... yada yada... Now get off my lawn.

Thanks for the input guys. Do you think a U-lock or a disc brake lock with alaram would provide better protection?
My concern is when I leave it on the street during the day while at work in Chicago. I don't think it's likely a truck will pull up and drag it in a truck as there are a lot of people around and cameras everywhere. More concerned with somebody walking up and hacking at it and driving off with it. I'm leaning towards the disc brake with alarm because if it's start going off I don't people will mess with it with so many people around.
Over night I have it parked safely in the garage.

How much protection you think you need is up to you. Everyone has their own way of securing (or not securing) their scooter.
Now, my question is where did my huge post count go?

I also have full coverage. At work, I get to park (with the manager's permission) on the sidewalk sort of in front of Panera's. I've a bicycle cable lock and a matched-key set of padlocks. Put on the cover, thread the cable through the cover's loop, chain one end to my scoot's bolt, wrap the other around the handicapped pole. I know, someone wants it and it's gone. But there's always--ALWAYS--plenty of folks in and out of Panera's. So I'm not real worried about serious thieves. The cable keeps away the screwer-withs. The cover keeps away the landlord. My bigger concern was parking in a spot 'cause we've some real idiots going through that lot. I'm afraid even at the back end of a spot, someone'll race into there and bang goes my Piggy. At home he's in a garage, either behind my car (when I'm getting to ride him ) or in front (when I don't ) Like to see someone steal him around my wagon! As for your situation, I'd probably check into remote alarms, if there really isn't much chance of it being hoisted into a truck. A remote alarm will alert YOU if someone's messing with your bike so you can run out there. A regular alarm, if folks shrug it off like they do car alarms here, you'll go out to a missing bike anyways. Or if they make them, an alarm that's both. >'Kat

I don't ever have to worry about someone stealing my scooter, knock on wood! I live in a small town in North Carolina, I even leave my scoot running half the time, when running errands, getting booze and such....not trying to brag, just no problems with my situation...

I use a Kroptonite cable a master lock. I also have a nice link chain and master lock when more security might be needed. I have also thought about a small lock for the front disk brake-disk.

Greg Greg our post count and Date of reg, got reset with the new MB. I thank JR and Doug should see what can be done to fix this for members of the old form-- a transfer if you will But with the New V5 probords update it's going to require a request to PB for each person. As an outstanding parts dealer and long time sponsor, you should talk to Jr or Doug. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I lock my bike up with a good cable/ lock to the back wheel when about and at home i haven't had a problem with theft. I help alot of the neighborhood kid's at summer time with flat's, seat, handle bar, chain adjustments and the like.
