Hey all-
If your scoot had been sitting for just over a year, and only been started a few times just recently, would you bother with an oil change?
I changed my oil when I originally parked mine. It sat in an unheated garage in northern Ohio from late April last year until early June this year. At that time, I bought a new battery and started it up, just completed a valve adjustment, and am going to wash it up and put it on craigslist. Do I (or the new owner) need to worry about 1 year old basically unused oil?
Thanks!
Mark

There's Rotela in it now. In fact, if I am sure I will not buy another Scooter, whoever buys the old one will inherit about 3/4s of a gallon (along with 2 iridium spark plugs, 3 sets of oil plugs and filter screens, the original mirrors, the original top box, 3 helmets, a mesh jacket, a reflective vest, the first windshield I put on it, and about $40.00 of assorted fasteners I've accumulated for it over the years.
On the other hand, if I can find a burgman 400 for the right price in my area...
Thanks!

The new ower should change the oil before he runs it. If you don't sell it then you should change the oil before putting it back in storage.

Oil rather goes bad from particles like metallic flakes, and carbon, than from time. Most oils work fine for several tens of years if kept in storage. In a scooter, I suppose if you have one in a barn for 2 or 3 years, it might be good to do the oil change; but one year is nothing. Ride it around for a bit, like 500 miles, and then change, I'd say...

[replyingto=prodigit]prodigit[/replyingto]Yup,,as long as it wasn't ran too long,,the acid in the carbon the burnt fuel produces is the KILLER,,it will pit and eat up the inside of the motor in due time.

You run it at all and you start the cycle. Run it to get it good and hot, drain all the corruption and then fill with fresh to store it without starting it up again. Put a tablespoon of oil down the spark plug hole while your at it.

I put everything back together after the valve adjustment. I did the adjustment because the scooter wouldn't stay running while it was cold. When I checked the valves, both both gaps were almost non-existent. The adjustment fixed this, but I now hear a bit of a high pitched "tinging" when it's running now. Before I just assume the gaps are too wide now, does anyone have an opinion what else this could be? I set both gaps at .004".
Thanks!

Full synthetic oil once a year, anything else change it if have let it sit and not run it for at least 20 minutes in the past 3 months. Read this in some motorcycle rag.

Been almost 2 1/2 years since the post and 3 1/2 years since the oil change in question so hopefully its now been changed quite a few times. Time does seem to be passing by rather quickly.

Even though as rocky pointed out this is moot for the OP, I will just add that I'm likely the lowest-mileage driver a year. Yet every spring I get my scoot spring-tuned, which includes an oil change. Last spring when I went to my new mech, I heard the one working on my bike call to the guy who took it in. Didn't hear the question, but the answer was "She hasn't driven it maybe a couple-hundred miles, that's why it looks clean. But it's been a year, so yes, go ahead and change it for her." Which has been the opinion of the other two mechs--one Piggy-trained, one a motorcycle/custom bikes guy.
So anyone wondering, three trained bike mechs say change the oil annually even if it hasn't seen many miles.
>'Kat, who'll continue to have hers changed every spring
