Well, my scooter is sold. I got a fair price for it, and I think the new owner plans to use it as a display in a restaurant, so I may get to visit it.
Unless life brings a big surprise, I am not likely to have another scooter. Work is too far away now to ride one, and I don't use it recreationally enough to have one. So I wanted to say thank you to all for 1st your kindness and generosity when I needed help, but more importantly, how friendly everyone is. I have enjoyed my time here, and wish you all tremendous luck in the future.
Please be safe. Very warm regards to all!

This is my first scam. Before this, even when a buyer and I couldn't agree on a price, everything was terrific. I'm not trying to discourage CL, just trying to forewarn people.

I just had a scammer try to offer me 1/3 down via cashier's check, and the balance when a friend can pick up "the item". He said he was currently out of town and couldn't look at "the item", but was sure it was worth my asking price. He even offered to include an extra $50.00 for my trouble. Folks, please be careful when you are dealing with buying or selling anything used. It is frightening how many people exist only to separate you from your money, and how easily they can find you. I just got in from taking it for a test drive. One of the hoses popped of the valve cover. Everything is great now, but I am going to do what I should have done when I noticed the worn hoses and replace them all. Should allow me to get closer to my asking price at least.
Thanks everyone for your willingness to help!

Thanks all. Three good possibilities. I wouldn't think the nuts on the valves would be loose - I tightened them up pretty well. But you never know. As I was thinking about this, I did wonder about the hoses. When I removed the valve cover, the hoses were starting to crack a bit. Perhaps one finally gave out because I moved it around. I'll check tonight. And I had forgotten, but I did have one of the nuts come off the exhaust pipe a couple years ago, and the sound the motor made seemed to be coming more from the front of the bike like it is now.
With my luck, all three will be the problem.
Thanks again! Mark

Well, I took the scooter out for a ride just to blow the sting off a bit. I was going about 40mph about 3 miles into my ride, when all of a sudden, the tone of the motor changed to a very high pitch, it sounded like the exhaust was coming more from the front of the scooter rather than the back. Also, whenever I slowed down, it backfired. Not loud, but a definite backfire.
The only thing that I believe could have caused this was that I adjusted the valves. Anyone have any ideas what I should look for?
Thanks! Mark

Perhaps when we PM'd I should have mentioned where I live, and we could have made arrangements if you were interested. Wish I had... Mark

I put everything back together after the valve adjustment. I did the adjustment because the scooter wouldn't stay running while it was cold. When I checked the valves, both both gaps were almost non-existent. The adjustment fixed this, but I now hear a bit of a high pitched "tinging" when it's running now. Before I just assume the gaps are too wide now, does anyone have an opinion what else this could be? I set both gaps at .004".
Thanks!

There's Rotela in it now. In fact, if I am sure I will not buy another Scooter, whoever buys the old one will inherit about 3/4s of a gallon (along with 2 iridium spark plugs, 3 sets of oil plugs and filter screens, the original mirrors, the original top box, 3 helmets, a mesh jacket, a reflective vest, the first windshield I put on it, and about $40.00 of assorted fasteners I've accumulated for it over the years.
On the other hand, if I can find a burgman 400 for the right price in my area...
Thanks!

Hey all-
If your scoot had been sitting for just over a year, and only been started a few times just recently, would you bother with an oil change?
I changed my oil when I originally parked mine. It sat in an unheated garage in northern Ohio from late April last year until early June this year. At that time, I bought a new battery and started it up, just completed a valve adjustment, and am going to wash it up and put it on craigslist. Do I (or the new owner) need to worry about 1 year old basically unused oil?
Thanks!

I did Cleveland to Columbus (Ohio) and back a couple of years ago on my 150. Took the back roads. Most of the time was at 55 mph, so WOT. Temp outside was in the mid 90s. Scoot acted very well. My rear end hurt, but other than that, I'm glad I did it.
The only things I took were a small tool kit, 11 ounces of gasoline in a coleman jug, and the phone number of a friend who would have come with a truck if I had a problem.

If you were within 150 miles of Cleveland, Ohio, I'd do that deal in a minute, assuming mileage is reasonable for an '06. Someone in Georgia is going to wake up and realize they're missing a good deal.
Put it back on craigslist with either a requirement that the buyer e-mail you, or spell out your phone number. That keeps the nuisance replies to a minimum for me.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up getting it open by using a long screwdriver and prying the pin out of the latch. I still need to assure it doesn't happen again, but at least I know how to overcome it if it does happen a second time.
Now te next issue. After having it in a shed over the weekend, the battery is, of course, dead. I get absolutely no power from the battery. Won't start, no headlight or tail lights, nothing.
I put it on a trickle charger, and the indicator on the charger said immediately that the battery is charged. So I unplugged the charger, and tried again. Same results. So I hooked up again, and when my wife came into the garage, I went to show here what I was seeing. She pulled on the right brake handle, and when she did, the indicator on the battery charger changed to charging. When she let go of the brake, it changed back to "charged".
Any ideas on that one?
