I'm the customer that brought the Westendscooters the scooter. It's the SUNL SL50QT I made a thread about. The scooter had stalled out completely last week. Apparently, the original carb required a rebuild (out of my expertise level and budget), so I had it replaced with a new stock one. The clutch was definitely in need of replacement. I planned to do a stock replacement with a "red spring" upgrade, but I couldn't find a store that carried 38 or 40mm impact sockets, so I had Westend replace it. Thanks to the horrible conditions of some Richmond streets, the exhaust/muffler cracked. I used some "cheap-o" muffler sealant to at least keep the crack sealed until I can get it replaced. My 16/50s are installed! But now it's just the matter of getting the engine itself to turn over. I went to see how things were going a couple days ago, Westend knows his stuff! Everything was installed right (AFAIK). Spark plug was changed, did a once over...all that good stuff. The engine is a LJ139QMB. Is that particular engine just BBK resistant or known to have problems when BBKs are installed? I'd just like to get to the nitty-gritty and get that scooter back on the road. Westend's patience working on the scooter is HIGHLY appreciated. I couldn't find any other shop that'd do a BBK (or other performance mods), nonetheless one that'd even touch a Chinabike in the first place (most shops in this city DON'T) within reason!

I'd suggest an upjetting the MAIN jet from a # to around # - (within that range). # jets are usually good for exhaust mods/upgrades. Most suggest using # - MJ's for 50cc-based BBKs.

Since this post, I've... 1) Upjetted the carb to an # jet and TRIED to put on a UNI air filter. Apparently, it wouldn't take the filter. Looks like I'll have to get a # or # jet before it'll take. 2) Installed a new variator and put 9/5g weights in it (for 7g). A little lag on takeoff, but after that.... 3) Installed the "orange" performance coil. Noticeable difference (runs better than when I got it)! As for the "orange" CDI box...I kept the old blue one instead, because I crack 40 regularly on the straights with it. The orange one halted me to 35mph. 4) Had to replace the clutch assembly, tried to upgrade the springs in the new one to the 2K red. Gotta get a bigger impact socket (either 38 or 40mm) before I can finish the job, as the nut holding the spring down is THAT huge!. 5) Had to delay installation of the BBK and tranny gears due to harsh time constraints. Might have to take it to a shop to get 'er done for time's sake. 6) Drilled holes around the exhaust tip. 7) Rear tire went out, so it was replaced with an Innova 3.00-10. 8) Installed cigarette lighter socket. Now to ask questions... 1. Since installing the variator and weights, I've noticed that the engine RPMS drop sharply when releasing the throttle instead of holding them and/or going through the progressive slowdown. What can be done to correct it? 2. It holds a nice idle, picks up and goes just fine. But when coming to idle, the scooter cuts off (causing a restart). What needs to be done to fix this? The carb has been kept clean by keeping Sea Foam in the gas tank. 3. Is there a way to calibrate the speedo for an accurate reading? 4. I read something about cutting a wire to the CDI. Would it be necessary to cut any wire? If so, which one to cut (see picture below)? Other than that, the scooter runs nicely now. It almost feels...liberated! ;D

I think replacing the clutch springs can also help. My TaoTao has the "red" (2k RPM) contra and small springs. Excellent acceleration and hillclimbing performance, and it seems to unlock more rpms at the top end.
I'm going to replace the clutch springs in my SunL in a week or so...

Could be running rich. Adjust the carb.

Well, I can definitely put a couple of positives in for SDS....
1. Each time I've ordered from them using EBay, the shipment arrives at LEAST one day earlier than quoted. I've bought a couple items from there and will continue to do so.
2. Asked a engine-related tech question, and got a concise, prompt response from Mo. Very knowledgeable guy!
3. Speaking of Mo, his recent YouTube videos are quite comprehensive and easy to follow. When I get my 100cc BBK next week, I'll feel confident installing the BBK myself.
This is why I have SDS on my shortlist of companies I'll buy from repeatedly. Excellent parts, prices, and people that know their stuff is what keeps my respect.

[replyingto=salracer]sailracer[/replyingto]What types of exhaust modifications? I know the stock one needs a "donut" gasket (still has the restrictive stock one). I've seen some exhausts with additional holes around the tip and underneath to reduce heat temps.

As mentioned, I'm also looking to install performance gears as well. Which set would I need to buy to increase top speed? NOTE: I have an unused "Scrappy Dog" set of 16x50 tranny gears. Will they do, or would I need to get something different to increase top speed performance? UPDATE: Located the "lighter socket" I was looking for. Part ordered!

Heck thats a nice scoot,,I would just do the free flow intake/exhaust,up jet, coil, cdi, and run the heck outta it...lol Hmmm, that does sound a bit simpler to do. Would it help to install a BBK as well?

12" tires will not fit on a short case motor. You need a long case. I don't know what you mean by a swingarm, But the entire motor assembly IS the swingarm. You can install the second shock with a bracket. ;D You will also need to do extensive changes to the frame to mount a 150 in there, as the mounts are totally different. they are on the top of the case ;D This is what I was talking about. www.ebay.com/itm/08-ITALICA-SCOOTER-SWINGARM-/400419849989?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d3ae20705&vxp=mtrMy Taotao CY50-T3 has one mounted on the rear tire, attached to the engine as the exhaust. It had a shock mounted in the top hole, as seen in this photo.

Good morning! I recently bought a used SunL 50cc scooter that I plan to use as a project bike. I want to pop in a "short case" 150cc engine, put in some performance tranny gears, and attach a "short can" slash cut exhaust (found some on EBay for a decent price). I'd also like to install a "lighter socket" charger that connects directly to the battery. I've already bought 12" wheels/tires (current ones are 10") to improve ground clearance. This scooter does NOT have a rear swingarm, and I'd like to put one on because I want to install a second rear shock. Questions: 1. Which tranny gear sets would be best for higher top speed (as in teeth count)? 2. I've seen others mention that some wielding is required to install a 150cc engine. Where will I need to do the wielding? 3. Anyone know where I can find the lighter socket chargers? I need one that wires directly to the battery. 4. What additional parts will I need (beside the swingarm) to attach the second rear shock? Some pictures are attached to help with the recommendations.

A T3? I'd put 4g in mine, but then again, I weigh 280lbs. If you're lighter than me, 5-7g will do the job.

UPDATE: Changed the wheels/tires on my scooter to standard-sized instead of low-profile, both were properly balanced before I bought them from the shop. The same vibration issue still exists and I hear a little "whinning grind" noise. Checked the variator/clutch/belt, and all three were in good condition (though I did clean the variator, it was gunky).
I'm seriously thinking that it's the tranny gears, given that everything else is intact. Does anyone know of a good performance set I can buy, and what ratio I need (I'm looking for longer gears)? Also, is it possible to put a 150cc tranny gear set on a "sleeper 63" scooter (out of curiosity)? Any help is appreciated!

UPDATE:
This morning, the rear tire went flat while heading home. Tried to put air in it, and air was blowing out of 3 spots...2 on the rim itself and a big split in the tire.
The shop I got it from apparently is acting an about getting it fixed (despite it being within the warranty), so I'm about done with them. The scooter may just go back (and I'd hate to do that because I LOVE that thing)...

Unbalanced tires? Never thought of that. Didn't figure scooter tires needed balancing...but it's about that time for a new front tire. I wonder if I can switch out for standard tires (mine have the low profile ones)?
The belt is in remarkably good condition (looks pretty good), and the variator/clutch assembly is in tact. Tomorrow, I'm gonna change the tranny gear oil and see what happens (it's due for one).
