Today (after getting the exhaust stuff straightened out and some minor adjustments), I took my scooter out for a test ride. Ran like GOLD until I hit a pothole where it died on me. Now it's not starting, but compression/spark are definitely there! Upon inspection, all VISIBLE major components (carb, airbox, exhaust, CVT components) are intact. What to do, what to do?!?!?

Found out EXACTLY what the pesky problem is. Turns out the header on the replacement exhaust was bent, causing it to NOT sit flush on the engine (and as such, the snapped studs and NOW the stripped ones that must be replaced)! Time to put the straight pipe back on! First picture is of the straight pipe header. Notice how this one is nice and flat. The second one is the replacement exhaust, which has a curved header that didn't allow it to sit flush and therefore giving me leaks and broken/stripped studs. Lesson learned!

[replyingto=scootnwinn]scootnwinn[/replyingto]After further inspection, that's exactly the problem. The header isn't sitting flush with engine, no matter how many times the nut's being tightened down. I'll have to make a slight modification so that the header sits flush with the engine BEFORE I tighten it down!

Check your "Triple Tree". Whenever your forks go out, that part is sure to be out of whack.
Also, your brakes might be a bit too tight and may require a minor adjustment.

UPDATE:
Exhaust studs AND gasket replaced (removed the head to do this), and exhaust was mounted. However, despite the exhaust header being mounted firmly (as in properly tightened down to flush) with the engine, it's still loud, leaks, and backfires when the throttle is released.
New studs were properly mounted into the head, and valves were adjusted to .004 on E and I. The carb (already set at about 2 turns from previous work) was not tampered with. Bolts/studs were put back in the correct position and tightened appropriately.
What could cause the aforementioned issues?

[replyingto=phssthpok]phssthpok[/replyingto]It is in essence, because my scooter also doesn't get past 6k RPMs, even on a downgrade, thus keeping my top speed at 43mph. It still drops major RPMs when the throttle is released.
I'm gonna try swapping the 9s out for the 7s (for a 7/5g combo) and see what happens...

Weights that would cause your symptoms would be to HEAVY of weights, in other words the belt would climb into the highest ratio on the variator to fast and would cause your rpms to drop and due to you having the throttle wot open with a drop in rpms you would get the hollow sound. But you need to run it for a longer stretch to tell if the weights are causing the problem by being to heavy, the RPMS will go up and down as it is picking up speed and not climb nice and steady. Alleyoop I've considered that as a potential issue as well. I have a 9/5g (for 7g) combo in my variator and wind up with the exact problem. Excellent launch and pickup, but drastic drop in RPMs when I release the throttle instead of the progressive slowdown. I have some 7g that came with my performance variator (along with the 9 and 5g sets). Should I swap the 9s or the 5s?

Just recently had work done to the scooter (as some already know). Last night I tried to replace the "straight-piped" exhaust with a new stock system, which was given a 6-point gutting.
Mounting the exhaust onto the header went fine. Then I put the nuts on and began tightening them down and SNAP! Now I'm trying to figure what would be the best method to address this problem.
I've removed the exhaust to prevent any possible "backup" into the exhaust port.
I'm awaiting a replacement Big Valve Head (because the one that was supposed to be installed was defective and returned)), so I'm currently using the stock one.
The studs broke off SLIGHTLY below the header pipe. It looks like they can be removed with a pair of vice grips. I was also wondering if bolts would be an appropriate substitute for studs.
Any help is appreciated.

How long have you had it? It might be a worn starter bendix.

Still gotta upjet (to a #92), swap out the airbox for my UNI filter, get the Big Valve Head put on (when it's replaced), put my 2K springs in (maybe), and replace the exhaust. I was wondering if putting on an "orange" CDI box would help (I have one on hand), but not so sure if I need to use it, as the current CDI already seems nicely broke in.
I don't expect much better until all mods are complete, but it'll definitely be better than almost getting sideswiped by cars while it's wailing at 35MPH!

Not enough info. What bbk, what jet, what carb, what intake, etc. I am the customer that requested the 80cc BBK with the Big Valve Head (brand unknown). Scooter is a SUNL SL50QT, with a LJ139QMB engine Carb is a stock replacement with an # Main. Intake is stock. O-ring seals were replaced. Airbox is stock (I have a UNI on hand if needed to replace) Exhaust is "straight-piped" due to cracking where the muffler/header pipe join, and is stock. Variator is performance grade, with 9/5g weights for 7g Clutch is performance replacement with 1500RPM springs (I have some 2Ks on hand if needed to replace) CDI is a "Blue" box that apparently has no rev limiter "Orange" Performance Coil Standard NGK spark plug. Original was replaced. Anything I missed?
