Sounds to me like you need to go up a size on the pilot jet. You didn't say if you changed the pilot, after your rebuild. Popping thru the carb, just off of idle, or as you start to accelerate from a stop, is caused by a lean condition, prior to the main jet coming into play. A slightly larger pilot jet will cure this problem.

I don't believe there is a problem with the quality of the Chinese carbs that come on these scooters. Starting my 8th season with the original, and with over 15,000 miles, it still works fine. Think it's probably a result of evaporation, and the resulting residue. Best to use a non-ethanol gas, and a cap full of MMO, Seafoam, or some other treatment, on a regular basis. If it's going to sit unused for a period of time....drain the carb.

I'm sure they'll find people willing to spend that much for a 29.8 mph scooter.....but I won't be part of that group. Totally happy with what I have.

I took my scoot out today, for the first time since October 26th. That's 5 months and 1 day since my last ride. Did just a 4 mile test run to get the tranny oil warm enough to drain.....temps in the low 40's, but it sure was nice to be on two wheels again. It's been a long winter. Looking forward to the warm weather, and the 8th season of putting around on my 'lil' china scoot.

I agree with w650, go back to the original setup, and see if the problem disappears. You are describing a classic sign of an overly rich condition, bogging or loss of power at 1/2 throttle and above, back off throttle a bit, and engine smooths out. Maybe the replacement jet was marked wrong, maybe the air flow is restricted in some way....but sounds too rich to me. A peek at the spark plug should tell you.

I don't know how a Gates belt can be sold for $5. Sounds kinda fishy to me. As far as being made in China or Japan.....take a look at this thread on this same topic....... Kevlar Belts
As a side note...I'm running my 3rd Gates PL30705...all 3 had "Made in China" stamped on them. The first 2 ran, 6812 and 6120 miles respectively, neither showed any fraying or cracking whatsoever. They just get narrower as they age, which relates to increased rpm, and fuel consumption.

Who's scooting today?
Not me.....in fact, I won't be until next spring. We've had 17" of snow in the past week and a half....salt trucks have made multiple runs, so I'm done til April. Didn't ride as much as I would have liked, but this years miles covered totaled 7,079.....breakdown went like this.
Scooter - 1,817 miles BMW#1 - 1,561 miles BMW#2 - 1,381 miles Ural - 2,320 miles

Had mine out today, first time in eleven days. We've had really lousy weather this fall, so with dry roads this AM, and no rain close by, I bundled up, and rode the 13.5 miles to the coffee shop. Only 37* on the bank clock, that's next door to McDonalds, when I arrived. An hour later it was up to 40*, so after filling the tank, took the long way home, covering another 19 miles. By the time I parked the scoot, picked up the mail, and hoofed the 2000 feet to the house....that piping hot bowl of chili I had for lunch, sure hit the spot.
Very enjoyable morning.

What are you Boys using to protect against ethanol in gas?? floridagull, and pistonguy, are dead on. Real gas (ethanol free) is the right choice....and then, only from a station that has a dedicated hose and/or pump, for its delivery. When a fillup is only a gallon or so, using a pump where one hose handles all grades, defeats the purpose. The first quart or two coming from that hose will be whatever the last customer used.....more than likely 87 octane E10.

No recommendations, but I wouldn't over spend on one. The oem carbs start at $18 on Amazon. My Jonway's original carb, has spent 6 winters in hibernation, and covered more than 15,000 miles, without a problem.....( save the auto enricher, I replaced it a few years ago). I am fussy about what I put in my fuel tank, and I do add a few tenths of an ounce of fuel treatment ($0.05 worth), to each fill-up. Does any of that make a difference? Maybe....Maybe not.
Just don't get sucked into a $50 carburetor.

If I was sure there is no vacuum leaking, I'd be all over the carburetor.
Sounds to me like...Dirty/partially plugged jets, or a malfunctioning auto enricher. Do you use gas containing ethanol? Ever run some kind of fuel treatment to keep the carb and upper cylinder components clean?
Or, if you don't have time to fiddle around...you can get a new carb for $20 or so. No reason to go name brand...the Chinese copies are just fine.

Even though you say it's not the jetting, that's what I'm going with. I had to go to this thread, to figure out which jets you have tried......(what a pain). I have a bike that will pop/fart through the carb when giving it gas....but only if I take off before engine has had sufficient warm up time. Once it has warmed up, or if I open the enrichers, there is no popping. This is a clear sign of a lean condition. Since I'm getting this when coming off idle, or at lower throttle settings, come winter I will be replacing this bike's 40 pilots with 42's. Your problem is at the upper end, when that free flow filter is really doing it's thing, so I'd be increasing that main jet size.

I noticed this a couple of years ago. Guess if you want to say eighty five using numerals, you could use 80 + 5, or 80 + 13, for ninety three....etc, etc. Kind of a pain in the butt tho.

You can fiddle with the idle mixture screw (the one behind that brass plug), til the cows come home, and it won't help your hill climbing ability a bit.
Do you think that maybe you are expecting a little too much from your trike? It will never perform like the one you used to have, with twice as much engine.

Come on.... slap a new sneaker on it, and give it some exercise. Mine's not 10 yet, but I'm in the middle of its seventh riding season. The guys at my morning coffee joint always chuckle when I pull in on the scoot, and usually make some sort of wise crack....I just smile and say, can you drive your car all week on $3.50 worth of gas? Although I do enjoy the power, and smoother ride of my larger machines..... there is something about riding the scooter, that I really miss when it sits unused for 3 or 4 days. Can't picture myself ever giving up the scoot.
Get yours out and ride it.
