I rejetted my wife's Buddy 125 and it has been running like a 50cc scoot since. It starts and runs OK but struggles to reach only 35mph. My wife is not happy because she is a WFO rider. -It was running great before I installed a number ninety-five main jet. I have been running that same jet in my Buddy 125 so it should work well. -After discovering that the engine is underachieving, I dropped the float bowl and ran a wire through the jets and passages. Everything looked good but the engine is still a slow poke. -The plastic cap cap atop the carb developed a crack. To loosen the stuck float bowl screws, I had to use an impact driver, and apparently cracked that top cap. -I repaired the crack in the carb cap with two coats of epoxy. Looks like a good repair, but the engine is still anemic. -I re-opened the top cap be sure the spring and diaphragm were in place. It all looked good to this layman. -I have ordered a new cap and screws, since they waller out pretty easy. -Somebody suggested that I try some grease on the edges of the diaphragm, to be sure that it remains seated during re-assembly. I did not have time to try the grease today. (I remember when we used to apply Vaseline to the rubber gaskets and o-rings in our Holley carbs to help them seat). -I am open to suggestions. I do not think the CVT is limiting the speed. The engine seems to remain in the proper rev range. It seems starved for fuel when I ride it. Thanks

Put the old jet back in. You always go back to square one before you dig into everything else.

I agree with w650, go back to the original setup, and see if the problem disappears. You are describing a classic sign of an overly rich condition, bogging or loss of power at 1/2 throttle and above, back off throttle a bit, and engine smooths out. Maybe the replacement jet was marked wrong, maybe the air flow is restricted in some way....but sounds too rich to me. A peek at the spark plug should tell you.

I invoked the old Holley carb trick and it worked (apply a little Vaseline to the edges of the diaphragm to help seal it). My wife's scoot runs at full speed now. -If this didn't work, I was going to put it all back like it was to see if that fixed the problem. -I appreciate everybody's help.
