If it's been sitting for a few years, it would probably be best to replace the carb and fuel lines, total cost less than $50.

Since you are a former motorcycle rider, I highly recommend the Znen SSR Pacifica ZN150T-18 with 16" wheels (the blue one in my sig pics below). It handles more like a motorcycle thanks to the larger wheels, and has enough power to keep you at the front of the pack, and even take the occasional ride on the freeway, while getting 60-70mpg. It is Cali Carb approved, and I purchased mine from a Cali online dealer www.powerrideoutlet.com (they have recently reduced the price to $1329, I paid $1400 back in Jan). I have owned motorcycles as well as scooters with 10" and 13" wheels, and I find this 16" wheeled scooter to be the perfect answer for someone who wants to ride on two wheels without the typically jarring scooter experience.

No, this is a forum member who has started his own scooter business (mostly mods, selling scoots proved to costly business-wise where he lives).

Set the valves, then tune the carb.

80 years ago a man start a pig farm here in the Las Vegas of a few thousand people, miles from the nearest neighbor. Now Las Vegas has a pig farm ran by the third generation in the middle of 2 million people. Next stop in Vegas skip the Strip come visit the pig farm. I actually met the family at The Horseshoe years ago, in-bred beyond belief, but very friendly. I personally think anyone who bought a house near the pig farm should have to live with the pre-existing conditions, the pigs were there first! Love your description of a good ride, hope you have many of them!

A 100 main is probably too large, too small. Try 96-98.

-get a good belt -get a performance (larger) variator -switch to slider weights -switch to a uni type air filter (usually requires upjetting the carb)
The list above will cost $100-$150, and give you much better performance at a low cost.
For another $80-150, you can get a BBK, highly recommended as the old saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement!
A ported head can get pricey, but a decent performance head can be had for <$100, and can improve performance with or without matching it to a BBK.
For another $100-300, you can get a performance exhaust. IMHO this is the least bang for the buck, most aftermarket exhausts are not cheap, and you don't get much more performance considering the cost.

You can find a bolt of the right thickness and sufficient length, and cut it down to size if too long.

Get ready to buy a scooter for her. Once bitten, the urge to ride never goes away!

I would bet you could find a suitable hinge pin at your local Home Depot or other hardware store.

For hauling stuff, a trike attachment may be stabler and easier to drive. I saw a homemade one at Home Depot a while back, the owner allowed me to snap a couple of pics, and told me he made it himself:

I'm 5'10", and I cannot sit flat footed on my 16" wheeled 150cc scooter both feet on toes unless I lean (which I don't do). And the dual rear shocks are adjustable, so you can raise it a bit, though that also stiffens the suspension. There is not a ton of floor space, due to the front storage box, so no streching the legs forward.
