I'm trying to find ways of making my gy6 engine run better and more reliably. Basically I'm trying to find out what parts could be replaced for better ones. What kind of trips can I be expected to make on it? The other day I drove 15 miles and my belt snapped. Is there a way to keep that from happening? Is that normal for this engine? Thanks in advance!

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many options are availible. It all depends on what YOU want the scoot to do. Is this a NEW scooter? What size engine? 50cc -150cc-250cc--- Are you willing to work on it yourself? Start simple and go from there. Obviously a better quality belt is needed first A Gates Kevlar is a popular option- Have you done any mods to the scoot? Do you know how to change the oil?

Its 150cc. I'm more than willing to do the work myself. Its a Baja SC150, but it has a brand new engine. I do know how to change the oil. It has no mods currently.

Belts should last 1k-5k miles depending on quality/manufacturer and how old it is. I personally won't buy any other belts except Kevlar made belts, maybe aramid if I can't find kevlar. Kevlar is what bullet proof vests are made of, and the belts amaze me at how much abuse they can take. Getting quality engine oil is a must if you plan to ride it for a long time and for many miles. Royal Purple is amazing engine oil, I gained a little torque when I switched to it. It looks like purple drink though, so make sure you don't confuse it with corner store grape koolaid hahajk. Always use 91- octane. Make sure to keep up with scheduled maintenance. The usual maintenance are about ever 200-300 miles for the first 1k, then every 500 for the rest of it's life. I personally do an excessive amount of riding and change my oil every 200-500 miles. Most importantly, avoid cheap parts, just get quality or get a pickup truck.

Gates belts are not Kevlar.
Bando, and some other brands make Kevlar, or Aramid belts. Kevlar and Aramid are basically the same. Those belts will last a LONG time.

I'm trying to find ways of making my gy6 engine run better and more reliably. check your oil before every ride, and refill if needed. keep your oil changed, it doesn't require much oil so changing it once a month is no big deal. check your air breather, keep it clean and change it when needed to improve gas mileage. change out the OEM spark plug with an iridium one. these buggers are expensive but worth it. replace the tire valve stems with quality ones. this will depend on what kind of chinese ride you have. if you get a good one, nothing. if you get a "bad" one, be prepared to pull your hair out screaming. i had 2 chinese rides, a good one and a bad one, both served me well except i had to do a lot of work on the bad one. what ever you want to make. my bad ride would only allow me to ride about 3 or 4 miles before it overheated. i slowly ironed out the problems with it to where i could ride the crap out of it all day long in degree weather. no. i put 10,000 miles on my bike and replaced the belt once. if you are experiencing belt breakage, then you have some kind of problem in the CVT, or you are getting cheap belts. Don't forget about the gear oil. I change the gear oil when I do the engine oil.

-get a good belt -get a performance (larger) variator -switch to slider weights -switch to a uni type air filter (usually requires upjetting the carb)
The list above will cost $100-$150, and give you much better performance at a low cost.
For another $80-150, you can get a BBK, highly recommended as the old saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement!
A ported head can get pricey, but a decent performance head can be had for <$100, and can improve performance with or without matching it to a BBK.
For another $100-300, you can get a performance exhaust. IMHO this is the least bang for the buck, most aftermarket exhausts are not cheap, and you don't get much more performance considering the cost.

Limit the amount of time spent running at highway speeds.....lower rpm's, equal longer engine life.

Hello again Joshua,
My apology for asking such basic questions to start with. ( needed a starting point )
You would be surprised to know how many folks can't do basic preventative maintenance then complain about poor craftsmanship.
That being said......
Other folks will tell you companies do not make things they do ( Kevlar Belts for example )
To extend the lifespan of your engine,
Make sure it has decent cooling!!!!!!!!! Change the Oil Religiously, and above all else, Do your own research!!!!
I am a 50cc guy but, I expect no less than 15,000 miles before an engine rebuild even on a china scoot.
GOOD LUCK BROTHER!!!!!!

Exactly, that's why I use MMG belts. Kind of a pain in the arse to find, but they are made of real kevlar, and put up to so much abuse it's really amazing. I had a bando aramid belt that could put up to some abuse, but nothing next to a MMG kevlar belt. MMG belts have never snapped on me, the only one I have that is out of service has some of the threading torn out and some of the back of the belt torn upwards, all damage from my variator nut coming loose and the whole thing coming apart, but it still got me home in that condition.
