What everyone above said. I had my 5 month old 250 stolen on a bright and sunny Sunday morning when parked near a busy intersection. It was only secured by the fork lock. Slam the handlebars hard and you can pop that easily. I got it back the next day. It had only been stolen so that the thieves could steal the carburetor off of it. Since it was registered and plated, the police actually put it on the stolen vehicle list and kept an eye out for it. They usually don't look very hard for a 50cc, since most of those get taken, loaded in large trucks, and sold out of state. And, of course, virtually no matter what you do, it won't be 100% effective. Some people don't bother with locks, but they do get replacement insurance, so they can be riding a few weeks after the theft.
No matter what you choose, good fortune to you.

Yup, what they said. If you are only doing the in town thing, you really can't beat a scooter. Mostly because while some of the riding will be for pleasure, a whole lot of it will be for trips to the grocery store, or maybe to the park, where the carrying capability of the scooter comes into play. You can certainly put saddlebags and tank bags on a small m/c and give it near the capability, but you are still left with the up/down shifting every time you come to a red light or stop sign. Also, the ride and handling can be quite different between the two. Kind of like, why should I buy a van instead of a compact car. Different tools. If possible, borrow or maybe rent a scooter for a day. Even a 50cc will give you the feel for the difference in handling. A lot of scooter owners also own motorcycles. When I wake up for work, a lot of the time I don't know whether I'll take my scooter or my Yamaha 1200 in. Most days it is the scooter, though. Hope that helps..

I checked off Roketa, though they don't actually manufacture, they buy from several builders and stick their name on them. Mine was sold as a Roketa MC-79-250. Actually, it's a Sampo Steed from the Sampo Manufacturing Co. Drive system ( Linhai type engine) is good. Plastics are kinda crappy...

No problem.. just consider the ride to be experience.. Better to grab some when you don't have to, than get caught without any experience and not have a choice.

Totally sucks. My 250 was stolen last year. Got it back a day later missing the carb. A-holes committed grand larceny for a $ part. I feel for ya.

Once ObamaCare kicks in, nobody will even need a helmet. You can get fixed for free...JUST KIDDING!!! But seriously folks.. If a helmet isn't mandatory in your state, then it absolutly is your choice. I have large bike riders that immediatly take off the helmet when they cross the state line. Their choice. Me, I'm comfy inside my helmet. (Bilt Modular with stereo speakers, drop down sun visor- in summertime, I remove the front piece). but thats me. On smaller scooters, one advantage is that you get much less police attention. Appearance is everything, and if you look like a safe rider, then the hassle factor decreases a lot.
If you have some friends with helmets, try exchanging with them for awhile. It might really be that the helmet you have just doesn't really fit you very well. My modular is rather heavy when held, but when worn, balances out quite well, and keeps the bugs out of my teeth and eyes. I don't have to worry about helmet hair...anymore. Oh, and if you like the free feeling that riding helmetless gives you, try naked scuba diving..Wonderful!

It's nice every once in awhile to hit a decision point that makes you take a look at what you have and how you ride. And it's wonderful to find out again that what you already have is that "just right" fit that you really want. Shiny side up..

I have a 1990 FJ1200 with over 60,000 miles on it and they are really excellent bikes. Fairly easy to work on, made for many years, so parts are available, and a great support group exists at www.fjowners.com. Tons of power, and weighs over 600lbs. I prefer my 250 touring scooter for in town use but as an all around sports/touring bike for the open road, the FJ can't be beat..(well, by some of the newer super sports, yeah). If at all possible, have both. Or trade for the FJ now and get another scooter later. Oh, and be very very careful with the throttle. They redline around 9500rpm, and a very little twist on the throttle results in a lot of response if you are used to anything else. Also, just read about the wife says no.. Good luck with that..

Welcome Back, Loosegrit. Did you have to bring all this wind with you? or did your scooter just churn up the valley air?
