Maybe at some point we will be able to tell what type of variator we have by weighing it or by how thick the face is , or both I have sent TWO emails to Koso asking simply if they make a variator kit for GY6 engines (their product list does NOT show any such product). The Koso people - being GREAT with customer support - have completely ignored both emails. Its strange they don't show any variator for a 150cc gy6 engine. They are all for the bigger named scoots and nothing over 125cc. Maybe one would work with ours , but even the pics for them look nothing like the ones being sold on eBay and everywhere else. They variators on their site look much nicer.

Another funny thing is there are other unmarked variators selling on eBay that look identical to our Koso's . the only difference is there is no writing on the back of the back plate , and the rollers are unmarked. Think about it .
1. The print on the back plate is identical to the DLH variator 2. They Koso's come with gouges and nicks over the face 3. There are other identical variator being sold unmarked 4. Koso's site mentions nothing of these variators 5. There are at least 3 Koso's that weigh diff and are visibly different 6. The last one I bought didn't even come in a koso package
I'll be ordering a new variator in about 2 weeks , and will post the results.

YES!
In USA the name "Koso" means very high quality and performance. Many people have interest in Koso product. But there is a problem. In the last year or maybe longer product with the name "Koso" come to many American customer that are NOT such high quality, and customers are disappointed.
We believe maybe there are not really Koso product, but are counterfeit. When I look at your product list on-line I do not even see variator kit for GY6 engine. Because of this I begin to believe ALL variator for GY6 with name "Koso" perhaps are counterfeit. Thanks to your response now I know this is not true.
We belong to "internet message board" for scooters and have started discussion to try to understand how to identify REAL Koso product from counterfeit. We try to use the weight. We try to use detailed physical dimensions. But we are not experts in Koso product and cannot tell what is maybe real Koso product and what is counterfeit.
As I said, Koso name is highly regarded here. But counterfeit products that use your name, but are low quality, damage YOUR name "Koso" because customer cannot tell this is counterfeit and thinks your REAL products are not very good. So I believe it is good for YOU to help us know what is "counterfeit Koso" so we can tell customers what products to avoid.
Is there a person we can send photos and detailed measurements to - person who can then tell us if the product we examine is REAL Koso product or only counterfeit? And is there way to know through you how to obtain REAL Koso product, even through agent in Taiwan or other country where you DO have agent?
Thank you for your kindness
RCQ

Will post results that come in.

That's interesting , they say they do not currently have any agents to sell them in the US , so does that mean all the Koso's being sold here are fake ?

That's interesting , they say they do not currently have any agents to sell them in the US , so does that mean all the Koso's being sold here are fake ? No necessarily. Koso is a Taiwanese company. Do they have manufacturing plants in mainland China? Maybe. It's a well-known fact Chinese factories - regardless of whose they are - often suffer from product "growing legs and walking out the back door". It's apparently a 'business-cultural' problem in the country that a percentage of product simply vanishes, to be sold by whomever to someone who then tries to make a profit reselling the stuff. Sometimes these are factory rejects; sometimes just normal factory production. The things we see on EBay or even from some retailers here might be the end result of this - real Koso product that made it's way to America NOT through a legitimate Koso sales agent. Or it might be stuff made by an entirely unrelated company - probably of a MUCH lower standard - that some enterprising person though he could sell at a high price simply by having whoever made it mark it to look like it was from Koso. Given the variety of weights and shapes of the supposedly Koso products we are seeing, my guess is this is most likely. I'm hoping Koso will respond further. It's in their best interest to defend their reputation, after all, and here we are willing to help. Heck - maybe we could even arrange for some retailers to work directly with them so they could distribute their product - their REAL product - here. I'm hoping Gates responds also ...........

I've been looking at the performance variator from Scrappy Dog Scooters for 150cc and was wondering if anyone on here has had some experience with that one?

Should contact as many ebay sellers of american koso as possible to get a wide eye view of the situation and be able to tell who's just stamping brand labels on stuff and who's going through the trouble of getting the parts from taiwan.

TBA , how many of the eBay sellers are going to be straight up with us ? I doubt they are going to say their product is a fake Or that they get their Koso's from an untrustworthy source. Yes we may be able to catch a seller in a lie but tba , what is that going to prove at this point ? We already know that the Koso's being sold are junk . it seems as if everyone is selling the same crap product. When you sell a product with Knicks ,scratches and Gouge's in them , you should know that there is a problem somewhere. Tba if I received a product like that , I would never try to sell it . the product would be returned or if I cannot return it I would take a hit or sell them at a discount price and mention the imperfections. Selling a product like that makes your company look bad and throws out major red flags that the product is not legit.

Lain - you seem to think sellers - especially ebay sellers - know what they are selling. I doubt that. Koso (as an example) is the designer and manufacturer. THEY know their product; others only read data sheets. Koso will sell to a national importer ("their agent in America) who is a "manufacturer's rep". They then sell to distributors, and these then sell to the retailer. the least knowledgeable of all is the retailer. If you want to know something about Koso products the best thing to do is to go to koso - which we are trying (hopefully they will respond). It would be great if engineers at Koso would work with us to identify counterfeits so the Koso name is not associated with low quality product (the "koso" variators we are seeing in this market are quite low quality and not consistent quality or design). Same with "Gates belts".
