It pays to invest. I've had my Vendetta 2 full face with tinted visor for over a year, SNELL approved and very comfortable, was like $125 locally w/ the extra visor and everything. Decent ventilation (sometimes I have to leave the visor cracked if it's really humid outside) but very good wind and water protection. No complaints riding up to 135 MPH on my Ninja 500 or 70 MPH during a thunderstorm. In fact wind/noise resistance was so good I rarely even bothered to "tuck" below the tiny windscreen. My Tao Tao came with a cheap like $20 full face helmet. I tried it on once and was like .... I would feel safer with a bicycle helmet. I've been very fortunate that my helmet hasn't really come into play in both of my accidents so far but you never know.
I remember a long time ago I think it was Bell had a slogan for cyclists like "If you get a $10 helmet, you have a $10 head!"

Here goes. I prefer Full Face modular and the base level helmet I would go with is the Bilt Apollo from CycleGear currently on sale for $99. Still has a fully removable washable liner, built in retractable sun shade and metal latches to hold the chin bar in place. Does not bump the tip of my nose as some of the cheaper helmets do. www.cyclegear.com/eng/product/bilt_apollo_modular_motorcycle_helmet/web1011690A half helmet or open face does not cut it for safety once you get over 20 mph so even on a 50cc scooter they are not a good choice. A broken jaw and facial reconstruction are one of the more common injuries in a low speed fall and a full face helmet will eliminate that. If I had unlimited resources it would be the Shoei Neotec modular helmet: www.cyclegear.com/eng/product/shoei_neotec_solid_modular_motorcycle_helmet/web1009645They are not too hot as some may falsely claim (I am a Northern Boy living in South Florida) and make the ride much less tiring especially at speeds over 35 where a half or open face helmet can catch wind like a bucket and cause a lot of neck strain along with fatigue. On the DOT verses Snell issue: Snell had to lighten their standard as it was shown to be too severe in some aspects relative to the ball penetration test standard which led to helmets that transfered to much shock to the brain causing brain trauma. The new Snell standard is a bit safer so one would have to be wary or old stock. The DOT standard did not suffer from this and is more appropriate to those not riding Super Bikes such as Scooterists.

After riding home one late, cold, raining November 2011 evening...I found this on Craig's List. The gods werre watching over me that nightt. Made it home safe, found the perect helmet,...correct size, color, features, and best of all...$$. It's a Nolan N103...excellent condition. The newest model I've seen is the N104. They are a bit pricey new though. Features I like: comfort, light-weght, warm in winter, cool in summer, vented, modular full-face w/drop-down sun visor and the styling. Italian made,..DOT....not Snell approved, but, tests have shown 0% failure on the locking mechanism. , , Absolutely love this helmet

I wear full face, only cheap but conforms to government spec (22.05-I'm UK based). That's the good news about a nanny state: anything over £50 for a helmet and you're just buying features, the safety is always the same.
I have considered an open faced helmet for visibility, but if I can get a near perfect anti-fog solution, that won't be an issue.
Personally (now this is a PERSONAL OPINION, don't start a flame war), I'm wary of the flip-top modular lids. It would just take one Monday morning/Friday afternoon factory worker mistake and you could end up with a face plate turned to shrapnel, a hinge into the skull, bits falling off. I just feel there's less to go wrong with a standard full face.
EDIT: I forgot to add, never buy a used helmet. Unless it comes boxed, with all the tags and visor cover on, never been used, don't touch it. It only takes one drop, from barely any height, to render a helmet completely useless. You wouldn't even see the damage. Ian

I consider myself a pretty safe rider. Defensive, 99% of the time. I prefer to ride slow, and relaxed, rather than racing, except for on my 50cc where I love to squeeze the juice out of it! I bought two of the cheapest helmets online on amazon, A $35 helmet, which I would definitely advise! It's probably one of the best helmets I currently own, aside from the padding being a bit squishing my cheeks (I probably bought a size too small): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HJJOZCI also bought this $40 helmet, which I bought for $25: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007RFBPG4It's as good of an open helmet as you can get, especially for the price, when using it on a 50cc scooter. On anything bigger (and faster than 40MPH) I would not recommend 1/2, or 3/4 helmets, but full sized. And I bought this helmet for $35 + $15 shipping: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003SBQ0Q6It's probably the best to second best of my collection, if it wasn't for the lousy latch mechanism (to open the front part of the helmet). For the rest, it's a good and solid helmet. I believe that more expensive helmets, can offer even better protection, lower wind drag, lighter in weight, and softer cushioning, however, the helmets I chose, are plenty good for a scooter, not going more than 60MPH.

I have been searching for the right helmet to add to the collection and did a lot of research. I wanted to get a helmet that offered the flip up, was safe, not too noisy and came at a reasonable price. I just ordered the Nolan N104 model which is pretty similar but supposedly a little lighter and larger viewing area. I found it at Revzilla for $325, which is on the expensive side but not as bad as the Shoei Neotec for $600. I love the Neotec, and our local shop has it on sale for $540 this weekend only, but the Nolan seemed to be so similar at a much lower price. The Shoei Multitec older generation helmet got poor ratings for side impact protection from SHARP and the face shield failed to stay locked in 17% of the testing so I skipped it. The Nolan got high marks for impact on all sides, AND the front face shield holding up in testing was a definite plus. Top notch safety, flip up and sun shield. Can't wait to try it out. BTW...I think the helmet would probably pass Snell tests, but they do not test modular flip ups as I understand. Gets the ECE rating though which is tougher than DOT. According to the SHARP site, one of the safest helemts and a flip up was the Carberg Duke, not sold in the US and so not DOT rated, but it was a pretty inexpensive helmet offered in the UK and to the Aussies.

This exactly what I wanted to hear!!! Hearing the reasons behind your choices makes it a lot simpler to decide. Thank you....Now are dark helmets hotter in the summer time? Yes. I go with light colors living in South Florida and riding daily. I also bring my helmet inside with me so it is not out in the sun and already super heated when I put it on.

JeepSteve - It is CycleGear and Leather Up for me most times. Here in South Florida the Leather Up Xelement Silver Ignitor Level 3 Armored Mesh Jacket works out quite well. Cycle Gear has a local store here so they are a good choice for helmets with a 7 day no questions asked over the counter return policy on hemlets. Gloves from LeatherUp don't have much of a warranty so Cycle Gear wins there with comparably priced armored gloves from Bilt with a 5 year warranty and their Sedici for a little more come with a Lifetime warranty. I got the Xelement perforated leather gloves with Carbon Fiber Armor and they fell apart in less than a year. All I got from Leather Up was a "too bad" but since I had worn them it was too late while Cycle Gear told me when their gloves showed a little pilling that they guaranteed satisfaction and would replace them wthin the 5 years if I so desired offering me a new pair at that moment.

I don't wear 3/4 helmets but I was tempted to look at one and decided to stay with full face/modular but I have to say the Bell Mag 9 was nice looking and comfortable and is now on sale for $69 at Motorcycle Superstore if anybody wants a cheap 3/4. It has a sun shield. They dropped the price because the new version has a communicator cutout. www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/67/905/45118/ITEM/Bell-Mag-9-Helmet---2012.aspx

I must have some jacked up head shape because I can't wear most ff helmets unless they're 2x size. My cheap wal mart 1/2 helmet size L fits perfect. I have a 3/4 XL that rubs my 4head something fierce. Size L HJC pretty nice helmet that's completely unwearable to me. Paid a lot for that helmet, thought it would fit like my 1/2 helmet.
And some cheap HCI FF helmets size 2X that barely fit. The 2X helmets are enormous! Won't come close to fitting in my trunk.

Eric, It could be your head shape. If you look on Revzilla or some other site like that they have a chart with different head shapes and the models that are specifically tailored for that shape. I wear a medium Shoei or Nolan, but an XL Scorpion.
