Hey guys, I was just wheeling my scoot around shoveling around it and stuff and noticed a LOT of resistance from the back, and major squeeking like the brake is engaged. The lever seems like it has lost it's springyness though. It feels like a lot more pressure than before and when I let go the lever doesn't spring back.
What do I do?

Have you tried adjusting the screw for the brakes?

Those springs seem to loose "power", mine is not as strong as it used to be, I have to tight the nut a bit from time to time.

The nut isn't the problem. I tried adjusting it but it makes no difference. I watched the lever on the back wheel, it looks like it is not moving well. I had to pull it back out after squeezing the brake lever.

Ok find out if it is the cable that is binding or the Actual brake pads inside the drum.
So try moving the Lever by hand pushing it forward and it should spring back. If not then the problem is inside the drum. If it does move forward and springs back then it is your cable that is binding inside the sheave. Alleyoop

I just noticed your in Boston, don't you guys have like 12 foot of snow right now? Your brakes may just actually be frozen (not seized).... Try applying heat (not with a torch)... Maybe a blow dryer or heat shrink gun??? What is the temperature of the scooters location?

It's been below freezing for days. It seems to stop holding it back after pushing it around a bit more or riding it but it still doesn't spring back. Could it be the salt and crap getting in there mucking it up?
Yeah there's a lot of snow... >.>

Wait a minute! You're actually DRIVING on all that snow?!?? You're far braver than I. My scoot doesn't come out in the winter, even with dry streets.
Just call me fair-weather. Or else a wussy?

As long as theres an inch or less, I know how to drive in it. I was forced to drive in it last year to get to work and home because I was working in a place where the public transit did not go. Taxi was out of the question as well, I did not even make enough in one whole day of working to cover the taxi fare for the distance and time for just one way at the time.
I think I'm going to just remove the back wheel and take a look at the brake, clean it out and see if it works better after that. I am thinking all this crap on the streets may have gummed it up.

The Gy6 is not really designed to cope with salted New England roads and will require extra maintenance to keep the rear brakes and wheel free. It may be coroaded or just full of ice at this point in time. It needed to be serviced when winter ended last year and then again before winter started this year.
You also need to pay attention to the tubular frame especially at either end of the floorboards to ensure the tubes don't rust to the point that everything folds up on you.

The frame tube is rust free. Suprisingly.
I just cleaned out the drum brake and brushed all the gunk out. The tiny lever under the CVT that holds onto the wire near the back wheel will not come back out when I pull the lever still. It took me using a wrench and pulling the lever back out with enough force the scooter almost back wheeled up onto me. After pulling the lever out to the fully disengaged position the wheel was able to move freely without resistance from the brake. But as it stands I cannot use the back brake without it locking up on me when I use it...
Is there something that tightens the lever? Not sure exactly how this brake works.

When I replaced the shoes on my rear brakes I cleaned everything with carburator cleaner, that stuff gets most of the goo off of everything, DON'T use WD40 as it will make your brakes slippery.

Yup,,you need a new brake light switch..I had to replace one on mine,,the factory ones where crap...also my rear brake was doing that,,it would stay on after I pulled it,,I took them apart and cleaned em all up with brake clean,,lightly greased the pivot points with some red grease,,then I lubed the cable..works like a dream now I agree with above comment,,that scooter wont last very long if you are riding it around in all that calcium chloride and salt......nope,,not at least without constant maintenance and repair.

Carb cleaner is good,,you just have too watch it around plastic and paint,,I got a little over spray of that 2X2 stuff on my instument panel and now the clear plastic cover is damaged in a few spots. Also got some on my seat and it discolored and distorted the material. DONT GET IT IN YOUR EYES!!!!!!! dont ask me how I know
