I got it running! I had an air leak where the intake meets the cylinder(?) but some gasket maker took care of that. Now I just need to take it for a ride. Next step is to fix the fuel gauge (ethanol ate the float) and to address the little bit of rust in the tank. (I initially said there wasn't any, but after digging out the remnants of the float, I stand corrected.)
Thanks, everyone!

Wow,,cool,,yeah the corn fuel will terrorize the fuel systems on everything. I had to replace my float last year,,I used a Ford Ranger float from a sending unit I replaced,,cut it to fit..i figured it would be alot more resilient to the ethanol than the cheap Chinese float,,I have heard of people replacing them every year. Also look for small chunks of the old one floating around in the tank. Make sure you have a good quality fuel filter on it for now,,one you can see through..advance auto has them for a couple bucks... They sell a gas tank liner kit,,if you have some rust this stuff will line the tank with a coating and stop it from rusting any farther. Also start to use a fuel stabilizer cleaner every once in a while like Lucas This stuff is good...almost the cost of a new tank but you wont have too worry about it anymore...I used it on an old KZ 900 and it repaired small pin holes no problem.Tank still doesn't leak 7 years later.. www.revzilla.com/product/kreem-fuel-tank-liner-combo-pack?utm_source=product&kwd=&kpid=167025&gclid=CjwKEAiAxsymBRCegqiLzI7Q1S8SJADOgQrzhtk2dQ2i2MbKrnxs-apoLbXJwnKMMp4bgdsV1ZRsihoCcp7w_wcB

It runs! I rode it to town and back yesterday. I had to adjust the air/fuel screw a bit more to get it to run with a load (read: my fat a... er, rear), but it is indeed running. Now I can move on to the improvements. Are de-restriction of the CVT/exhaust (I checked the carb already) and removal of the EGR/PAIR (I think I have both...) be advised?

Absolutely, check the tech section here, alleyoop has info on all the emissions stuff you can remove.
