Right after you take the Carb off Take a picture of the Front of the carb by the BUTTERFLY I want to see how much the BUTTERFLY is opened or closed. Picture like this: THEN: Get a SPRAY can of CARB CLEANER they come with a long thin straw you will need that. Then take the PILOT JET out and make sure you can see daylight through it. With the jet out STICK the thin straw into the hole the pilot jet screws into and SPRAY and SPRAY should come out by the BUTTERFLY PIC #1. PIC #1:

The main has nothing to do with starting and idling, that is all up to the pilot jet and enricher. Alleyoop Thanks alley I know that and stand corrected,,forgot he said it ran at full throttle only

It dies before I can get it started and get my hand down there. I had a roommate help and it made no difference. I can't tell if the choke is working because I don't have alligator clips to clip inside the plug to test. It's still starting, trying to idle up, then dying. You won't find anyone around here telling you to take it to a shop, we will stick it out with you till you are riding and smiling!

Here is the butterfly. I pulled the pilot jet and it is clogged. The spray cleaner did nothing. I couldn't find anything to clear it out like a small piece of wire, so it is soaking in cleaner. I will be swishing it around periodically.

That clogged pilot jet explains the problem, but don't assume it's the only thing clogged. Be sure you can spray through every single port, then follow alleyoop's tuning guide step by step. Depending on what clogged the jet, I would consider an entire fuel system flush out.

I have made sure that all the other ports are unclogged. Hopefully clearing that jet will do it... The 5-10 miles a day across town and back to my house are killer for my car's MPG and my wallet (although with gas prices falling, it's not as bad as it could be).

I use a G or B steel guitar string,,you can even use a piece off a wire brush,,just be careful it doesn't break off inside the port. Sometimes just compressed air and cleaner will do it.

Yep. Tried that. I'm just going to cave and order a new jet. Hopefully I get the right size. This looks right, but I'm not sure.

Don't order that one, unless the seller can verify it's size. Go to one of the sites in our banner ads at the top of the page. They are trusted sellers, and will list their jets by sizes.
Is your scooter a 50 or 150 cc? We can tell you the standard size pilot jet to get, and if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks, you might order one size larger for safety.

I've been told it's a #28, but that doesn't mean anything to me. As long as I don't have to spend more than $20, I'll do whatever it takes to get this thing running again. Thanks again, guys.

You should just go down to the dollar store and get a wire brush or music store and by a $1 steel B string,,thats how I clean all my carb ports here,,and I work on small engines all the time,,one guitar string will clean thousands of carbs.
Its always a good idea to have a few extra pilot and main jets also if you are going to get into this hobby.
If you want a string just PM me your address and I will send you a piece.I know you said you tried something already,,but a string and carb cleaner will clean out a pilot jet like no tomorrow.

If I can find a cheap wire brush, I'll go that route considering that the closest music store is an hour and a half away (~80 miles). Maybe our new Dollar Tree will have something thin enough. If not, I'll take you up on that offer. Thanks!

Also I think Alley wanted to see the bottom area of the butterfly,,it should be just cracked open a hair for idling. But since the pilot is clogged I think you found the culprit.

I got the jet unclogged! I found a $1 wire brush at the Dollar Tree and that did the trick! I'll put it all back together after I get off of work (2200 Mountain Time) and see what happens. Also, jerseyboy, I posted a picture of the butterfly a few posts back. If that's not a good enough shot, let me know before I put it all back together and I'll put up a better one.

Na,,you should be fine,,you said all the other ports that Alley showed in reply#60 are clear so give it a try and see how she runs.
Alley just wanted to see if the butterfly was open a crack or not,,if its not open a hair the GY6 wont idle,,that would be your idle screw adjustment to control the butterfly being open a hair.
If you look at the top picture in his posting,,you can see the butterfly is open just a crack(on the bottom) for idling.
