I started a thread a couple of days ago but cant reply to it so here we go. I was cruising at about 50mph when a sudden pop happened and the engine conked out immediately. Attached video shows what happens when I try to start and also view with cvt cover removed. Kickstart didn't budge to crank, even with my 230lb.+ fat

U should drain the oil and see if there are any pieces of metal in it . Also measure how much oil comes out " just incase it was running almost dry "

Yep if you cannot turn the Variator it is locked up. So time to take the top end off and see what went, the piston and valves and or the crank. Alleyoop

Thanks for the replies. It did not run dry, only ran 600 miles since last oil change and there was still about 3/4 qt. of oil in there. I saw a few really small flakes (like grains of salt) that looked metallic. and one black piece that was also tiny, maybe 1/8" long, black, thin and rectangular in shape. I was thinking it could be a piece of piston ring? What's involved in replacing the engine? I'm not interested in getting involved with replacing the internals of this engine but might consider swapping it out with a new one. Can I do it in a day or two? Do you have any recommended sites where to purchase an engine?

I would do the same. Just replace the whole engine/CVT. If you want to dive into the motor once it is out it could be a good learning experience, well worth the $300.00 a new engine/CVT cost you. If you are familiar with turning wrenches you should be able to do the job in a day easy. They are not too complicated that is the beauty of a GY6 engine. I am not sure where a good engine source is since I have not had a need to replace one yet. There are quite a few on ebay in the $300.00 range that includes everything, carburetor, CDI, ect. Good luck and happy scooting. George.

If it was me, and I needed a complete new engine, I'd forgo another of the same and get a whopping 200cc replacement like this one from Scrap-Dogs (only $550): www.scrappydogscooters.com/gy6-200_GY6-B_case.htmlHeck - I'm thinking of it and my brand new, 2-month old scooter only has 600 miles on it!

That's just a 150cc You will have to buy the kit to make it 200cc which is an additional 600 bucks . Go on eBay and get a new engine for 340 bucks and ad a bbk and head for about and extra $150 .

There are a couple on here that bought new engines from eBay and they also come with a new carb , starter , cdi , regulator , coil, and Oberon electronics . Funny think is that when I got mine it says this . . . LOL I'm guessing it was cheaper to import with the lower cc labeling . But everything has been great after 12000 miles .

Maybe I'm reading the advertisement wrong and do not understand, but it seems to me, GEH, what Scrap-Dwgs is selling for $550 is a complete 200cc engine.
True, you will need to add your carb, & exhaust ... but other than that it's a complete engine. You can do a big bore on it and increase it from 200 to 230cc, but as it stands (I believe) it's a complete 200cc engine, incl head, piston, etc etc etc.

You may be right , they really don't have the specs other than hp and torque, I do see that it shows an oil cooler and as I read down it has a rebuilt kit for the "gy6 200" which is a 61 mm cylinder so I'm gonna say it's a 61mm bbk on the b case , Which is no where near 200cc . Also there are no specs on the head either. But that's actually a good price now that I look back at it . I'd maybe ask for all the specs from the top end to the cvt . Might be a good idea to give it a shot . If you want a true 200cc complete engine your gonna pay about double for it , maybe even $ 1500.00

Just to let every one know that I have one of the t-Motorsport engines , it is a 150cc but imported as a 50cc . The p means it has been modified but the funny thing is that the engine case is top mount like a 150 cc so it was all done to cheat the import codes.

Bet a valve keeper come loose on a high rpm float and bombed the valve into the slug top. (....you dropped a valve)
Even so $100 otta get you a whole new top end kit. You wont know till you take the jug off and start splitting the cases. Once I got the jug off I can feel the crank rod for play while its still in the case.Often the jug + up is all you'll need.
