So my father-in-law did something dumb, and my Rocketa clone ended up on its side. Looked OK at first inspection..and put about 50 miles on it before it started backfiring and flames were shooting out the muffler. Died right after that. Took off the muffler and something was rattling inside. Replaced it (thanks scrappydog) but it still won't fire up. CDI? Or...?
My skills: replaced all electrical. Engine novice. Beer drinking savant.

So you have no spark at the plug I take it? You need to run a few tests,,does the head light still come on dim while you crank it,,its ac fired I assume? Take a look at this video it will really point you in the direction to get it back up and running Im sure!

If it randomly started backfireing and then died, sounds like the pickup coil is not telling the engine when to fire correctly, but idk.
First things first, take the plug out and put it back in the wire and crank it and visually look for a spark, may have to touch it to ground.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a shot in the morning. Beer on me if you're ever at Miller Park.

Could be as simple as the boot is loose on the spark plug , especially after laying it down.

Something in the muffler obviously broke or possibly the head, " I'd like to know what was rattling in the muffler " it won't start now even after muffler change . That's why I said check the plug boot , they are very loose sometimes and I'd imagine they'd fall off easy if laid down . Sucks if laid down on the muffler side , good chance of head damage .

Could be as simple as the boot is loose on the spark plug , especially after laying it down. What wouldn't cause it to backfire then die. Intermittant spark would cause the muffler to load up with raw fuel and then give a blue flame with a pop or more violent explosion the next time the plug fired and could even load up the cylinder or intake allowing a back fire through the carb damaging the air filter, diaphragm or float.

Backfiring after being laid down on the muffler side CHECK where the flange connects to the motor. If it is leaking there it will backfire sucking in air directly into the exhaust port into the chamber. And if it keeps on backfiring it will damage your exhaust valve then your in more of a pickle. Also check if the Manifold cracked and or Air Tubing did not come off. Backfiring is usually a very bad AIR LEAK. Alleyoop

Timeline wise. It sounds like you developed an air-leak(Very Common) which is why your backfiring. You may have taken out the exhaust valve. How long were the trips during the 50miles it lasted after.

It is about a 30-minute ride from my house to Miller Park. I made it there and back one night, and there and halfway back the next. So I went to take off the boot to check the plug, and it basically fell off with barely a tug. When I got the plug out, I found this: In case that doesn't work...the threads from the inside of the boot are still on the end of the plug, along with the U-clip. That's probably not supposed to be that way. So when it backfired, could that have somehow broke the boot? Here was something else that surprised me...when I took the muffler off, there was no gasket between the engine head and the muffler. I felt like there should be one, so I cut out some exhaust gasket material and made one. Right? So I'm thinking a new coil and a new plug (while I'm at it)...and then hope?

Looks like the clip inside the boot cap broke off. New plug and new boot cap. Alleyoop

I'm glad u checked the boot , that was my main issue with it not starting , i wouldn't make my own exhaust gasket , u should order a new one .
