I have the Jonway YY250T with the large trunk box, that I use extensively. The large box was a big reason why I selected this particular scooter. As usual with this box/scooter combo, the box has always rattled badly. When I installed the box, I used rubber washers in an attempt to dampen some of the vibration, but apparently, that didn't help. I was examining it the other day and noted several large cracks in the base of the box, extending from the rear mounting holes. These cracks were fairly severe, extending 2-3 inches in each direction. First off, I bought the bike to SAVE $$$, so I'm not springing for a Givi; I'm just cheap like that! Since I like the size of the trunk (except for the fact that it won't hold my full-face helmet), my initial plan is to attempt to repair it by bedding the interior with fiberglass fabric/resin: www.amazon.com/Bondo-422-Fiberglass-Resin-Repair/dp/B000BO7CVK/I've used this stuff before and know that it is durable and very easy to apply. Also, bedding the interior would allow me to add some reinforcement at the base to dampen and minimize vibration. But, this would also be a good opportunity for me to upgrade the trunk. I've looked around a bit and found some "Universal" trunks that seem like they might be decent for around $50 shipped: www.amazon.com/Universal-Motorcycle-Scooter-Touring-Luggage/dp/B004IAC3ZS/...and this "Bestem" branded box for about $ : www.amazon.com/dp/B001O79DHY/I would like something a bit more rugged than the flimsy factory box to minimize a lot of the rattling. Size is a big factor as I sometimes have to carry tools or some PC gear between sites. I have a backpack case for carrying a laptop, so the trunk is mostly for tools, small peripherals, accessories, etc. I don't carry passengers so an integrated backrest isn't required. Ideally, a replacement would be big enough for me to stash my full-face helmet, but that's not essential. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding any of these Universal aftermarket trunks? Are they junk (i.e., worse than the factory case)? Anyone know of any particularly good value trunks? If not, I'm going for the fiberglass mat and resin kit...

Buy a Stanley Fat Max tool box instead.

You could cut a piece of thin plywood to fit and glue it in with gorrilla glue. That is how I solved the same problem with a busted up luggage box.

Milk crates work really well.

Milk crates are fine if the scooter is a $700 cheapy.

To stop top cases from rattling, put some weather strip tape in the groove of the lid.

To prevent future cracking if you do repair the case, add oversized washers to the mounting bolts/nuts. This spreads the stress over a larger surface area, usually preventing the type of cracking at the bolt holes you described. Adding a rubber or teflon washer can help as well.

I just installed one identical to the eBay listed "BMW RFK series, motorcycle". It was listed as a different name, but is the same box. It's HUGE! Holds 2 full helmets.
It's very well made, proving China will provide any level of quality you're willing to pay for. It replaces an identical (but much smaller) top-box that was 7 years old, and still in excellent condition. It has a built-in light (4-LED) in the lid, and I removed the red wrap-around fake light and installed a strip of white LED's behind the red plastic, and, a pair of strip amber LED turn-signals on the outside. Now, the factory light in the lid is an auxiliary tail-light, the wide red strip is a monster stop-light and has amber turn-signals within. FULL safety lighting right in the face of cars behind.
This trunk compares very well with a similar large Givi on a friend's Vespa, and was under $100 delivered.
I have noted however, that it is SO long that the mount extends well behind the end of the strong aluminum luggage rack on my Kymco 250. I can see that with any kind of load, hitting bumps will soon break even a forged aluminum rack. So I will make a set of struts from the trunk mount, to the rear fender. I did this on my old 150, and with the struts secured with large fender-washers to the fender, to spread the load, it will stabilize the trunk quite well. The old scooter had the luggage rack break three times, but I never had a problem with the old scoot after making the struts.
The suggestion to reinforce the cracked trunk with plywood is a good one! It's worth a try for sure.
There's always a way!

I had no decent looking way to mount a trunk on my TMAX. I took an old backpack/bookbag from my college days and strapped it to the seat behind the backrest.

I would just replace it rather than throw X dollars into repairing it. If you might end up investing close to half what its worth to try to fix it on the first try and have to spend more if that dosn't work making it so you might find it more economical to just replace it if your intention is to keep the bike for a extended period of time. Consider also that the better boxes are more weather tight and usually have a real lock on them, still not Fort Knox but a lot better than most "free" boxes that come with a scooter. You can also get one that better fits your helmet and tools.
