Im hesitant to allow test rides from people, especially new riders, when they come to look at my scoot. What are your thoughts? I would start it up and ride it around for them, then theres no risk of then damaging it, dropping it, or hitting anything. Its a scooter. That should be enough to show a buyer that its in good working order.

I have sold a few this year and I have let people ride them. If you feel uncomfortable with the age or they seem shady ask that you can hold their ID while they test ride. You could always hold their cash while the ride also with a you wreck it you buy it statement. I've never had any issues with anything I've sold on CL and I have sold a lot.

It's pretty common around my area to request that there will be absolutely No test rides unless they have an M endorsement and helmet.
Asking a few questions will garner enough information about the prospective buyer for you to feel comfortable with letting them take/not take your bike.
If they don't know where the kill switch is might wanna just let 'em look at it, or have them ride as a passenger.

Yeah I will let them ride it and expect to ride a bike i buy. Obviously check for all the stuff mentioned above. If you don't let me ride it I will buy something else.

howdy, all what they said above. the only bike i bought without riding was from a dealer and that was with caveat that if i was not hapy for any reason, i could return it and get full money back. and that is what i did. it took it back and got all my money put toward another which they did let me ride beforehand. i ended up with a whole weekend of test riding.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Ill allow a test ride if: 1-has motorcycle endorsement if applicable. 2-has all proper riding gear. 3-over the age of 21 4-provides funds in full, cash or bank check, to be held until scoot is returned in the condition it left in.

Well if you had Nationwide insurance and was covered for mayhem test rides you might be safe LOL javascript:%20addSmiley("%20:)")
I would have a meltdown if some one wrecked my scoot and did not have the full amount in cash in my hand .
I sold my TaoTao to a guy who was so impressed he had the cash in his hand before he came to a stop . He had a stock scooter that blew up and mine had a fresh Air Sal 50mm BBK on it . I took a chance since I know he is an experienced rider and sober .
Many of the dealers do not allow a test ride without a cash deposit unless its in the parking lot and not on the street . People are stupid and not as many have morals and values these days so I would be very weary and insist on a cash deposit and if they wrecked or damaged it in any way its theirs and paid for

All I can add to what has already been said is- If the person meets all the criteria stated in the above responses, and you still have a gut feeling that you shouldnt let that person ride, DON'T. It's not worth the stress. someone else will come along you may feel better about.

Check out you liabilities in Florida first.
Dealers here usually won't allow a test drive untill you own the bike for good reason and part of that may be that if you get hurt it is while riding your own vehicle and not one that is technically still theirs.
There are risks involved in letting a stranger ride your bike and if you can't afford to take a total loss from a test ride gone bad then don't allow it without a 100% cash in advance agreement, signed limiting your liability clearly stating that if they damage the bike in any way the cash is forfitted, before they ride off.

Add me to the group of "I'd want to test-drive it first". I disagree with your comment "It's a scooter" A scooter isn't a scooter is a scooter. Mine rides nothing at all like the small-wheeled Vespa I first test-drove. A Burgy wouldn't ride anything like mine, I'd guess. So yes, I would absolutely want to try it before I bought it.
But like the others said, get an opinion of the potential buyer while you're talking about your bike and all. Ask questions about his background while he's asking about your bike's. Should be easy to pick out the noobs from the "old hands". And I'd think anyone shady would be pressing for a quick exchange rather than waste time talking. Although I've never dealt with anyone shady, and I freely admit my glasses are indeed rose-tinted.... Still, common sense says a bad person isn't gonna' waste time and risk discovery by chatting bikes and past rides and stuff.
And then have a form that if they wreck they pay. Or at the least a friend or two to witness a verbal agreement (which I gather from Judge Judy is indeed binding, esp with witnesses).
Don't stress it too much. There's more good people out there than scum. I posted on CL asking for a piano bench (my church somehow lost theirs). Nicest man responded, gave us one he'd had sitting around for a while.

I agree I just dont want it wrecked. So ill ask for the money up front. If they dont have it they can come back.
