Bought a 2008 JMStar MC-13-150 last year with 504 miles on it....never had any maintenance done to it but was in pretty good shape overall. This is just a list of my upgrades/experience with the scoot and maybe some ideas for anyone looking for them.
Every light has been swapped for SMD LED's including turn signals and they all work excellent, MUCH brighter than the stockers and super low power consumption. Right headlight is stock left one got replaced with an H4 low beam HID and that also is a HUGE upgrade over the stock lamps. It lights up houses next to me and road signs 100ft or so ahead of me.
NGK Iridium plug. I also keep a spare one just in case.
"Gates" belt. It's the knock-off imitation Gates from Ebay, Seems decent but it's NOT an actual Gates belt. I bought the real thing from NAPA and keep it under the seat in case I have problems.
Removed airbox and emissions canister....Replaced with UNI filter. Was much easier than I thought and cleans up the engine compartment tremendously.
Replaced ALL fuel and vac lines...see above
Did valve adjustment at 1200 miles.
Put PCV on crankcase. Just run a tube UP to the frame from the crankcase and mount the valve, Oil doesn't relly escape at all because the stutter action from the valve makes it run back down the tube.
Re-jetted carb to 115 main. Tried 120 and 110 also but 115 runs the best for me.
Replaced rollers with 12g sliders. HUGE acceleration improvement and no loss of top speed whatsoever.
Got "performance" CDI and Coil from Ebay. Zero performance increase but what it did give me is known good parts (stock CDI and Coil) to test with if the scoot starts acting up and both were super cheap.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Big difference all the way around with the new parts. Acceleration from 0-40 is much improved and about the same from 40+. UNI filter makes the engine noise louder and the PCV itself is noisy also but definitely not unbearable. Engine RPM went from around 5500 under acceleration to 6500 which helps put it deeper into the powerband.
Nothing really unusual to report since it seems my results are a lot like everyone else that does the same upgrades. Fuel pump is next since it has a high failure rate and replacement is cheap and then maybe an el cheapo ebay exhaust.
I took a bunch of pics to show what was removed and how it looks when your done:
First are a couple pics of the overall scoot...
Next is a pic of where I mounted the tach and also shows my HID switch
Rear view without airbox, Really opens it up under there
Inside view after removing emissions and extra hoses
Carb with new lines...Had to use the clear line because the black stuff was too thick to fit between the rear barb and the carb casing.
Headlight (HID off)
Headlight (HID on) HUUUUUUGGGGEEEE difference
Top speed right now is about 56-57 actual mph (chinometer says 70) on level ground and it struggles past 55ish, The last 3-4 mph takes a while. I mainly drive to work and back on it which is about 12 miles one way and mostly 45mph speed limits and I am currently getting 67 mpg (actual) out of it which I am thrilled with again considering I weigh 200+ pounds I though it would be less.
2900 miles on the scooter now and nothing major to report, I have done 6 oil changes since I bought it and had to fix a flat tire and tighten the fuel drain hose screw. No actual problems and it runs like a champ. I do carry a lot of spare parts and some tools in case I have an issue and my trips are usually only 10-15 miles.
Under my seat:
Belt, CDI, Coil, Spark plug
1/4 drive ratchet and few sockets, Small and large phillips screwdrivers
Flashlight
Towel
Rain jacket ($40 at Gander Mountain)
Gloves, regular and winter ones for cold/rain
Temp gun
I will try to keep the thread updated if anything happens (good or bad) and will answer any questions I can.
