Kind of new to engine work, but trying to get the 50cc scotter back on the road. It was laid up all winter and initially had some starting issues. Did some general carb cleaning and got the clogged jets cleared with some canned air and carb cleaner. New fuel filter, checked the air filter (ok). So now it starts right up and idles fine for about 40 seconds, then the rpms start dropping off like its starved for fuel or air, and stalls. I can restart, but it's at a lower rpm and dies off quickly. If I leave it a bit, it repeats. Rather than just throwing parts at it, any suggestions? Fuel enricher? CDI? Another clogged jet?

Sounds like to much fuel, and it is flooding it. Turn the Fuel Ratio Mixture Clockwise, try a full turn and see if that keeps it idling. If you can keep it idling let it warm up and then fine tune the carb to get the HIGHEST IDLE out of the FUEL RATIO MIXTURE SCREW. Alleyoop

Also check the float valves as it is easy to bend it while taking it apart

Well, I gave it a full clockwise turn and that seemed to keep it a bit longer (maybe an extra 30 seconds?), but stalled again. Waited a couple of days and tried another half turn clockwise, causing low rpm and another stall fairly quickly, maybe 30 seconds total. Maybe too lean now? I don't know much about carbs, but had heard there are two jets, one for initial starting and another for when it warms up? Maybe that second one was clogged (I thought I checked both, but......)?

Alleyoop As stated about, a Full turn clockwise helped a tiny bit, an extra half turn went worse. Re-disassembed the carb, used a bunch of spray carb cleaner, reassembled, with little difference (once the fuel got to the carb bowl from the fuel lines). I'll play with the mixture some more, but may just have to throw parts at it. Suggestions for a next step?

Latest attempt... Turned all the way clockwise (lean), then backed up 2 1/4 turns. High rpm start and immediate stall, 2.5 no start, 2.75, no start, 3 no start.

If your carb was clogged pretty bad there is a decent chance your lines could have clogged up also. I would hit up the closest auto parts store and snag a few feet of fuel line for it and get a new NGK plug while your there. Also check for vacuum leaks which can/will cause the fuel pump to starve the engine. Check the lines themselves and the rubber intake that the carb bolts to, They are known to crack and cause vacuum problems.

That rod your pointing to is the excelerator pump. When you give the THrottle a good twist it pushs the rod down and squirts gas into the VENTURI. Take the ENRICHER OFF and look at the PLUNGER: Here is what it SHOULD LOOK LIKE COLD: IN this position it should feed extra fuel for starting and it should cut off the EXTRA FUEL within 3-5 minutes. AFTER that it is fed ONLY BY the PILOT JET. Alleyoop IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS RETRACTED when you pull it off COLD: IF IT LOOKS LIKE THIS IT IS BAD -- EXTENDED COLD:

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto] alleyoopActually the enricher seemed fine. It was the rod on the other side I was pointing to (the tip of the arrow is touching it). I've gone and gotten all new hose that I'll install in a couple of days and post the results.

I told you what that rod is it is the excelerator pump. When you twist the throttle a lot it pushs the rod down and squirts some gas into the VENTURI. You can see the gold outlet right inside the AIR INTAKE side of the carb sticking out.
