It looks exactly like the retaining clip/spring that fell out of my performance plug boot. I tried to find a picture of one, but my Google fu is weak on this one. how would that end up in the engine? will a compression test tell me if my valves are leaking? i'm thinking about picking one up instead of taking the engine apart.

How many miles are on this scooter? Did you spray starting fluid around the carb and intake just to rule out any cracks or leaks? IF there are any the motor will speed up when you spray it. 16,000km. i don't have starter fluid so i haven't done that yet. i did take the intake manifold off yesterday and put a layer of gasket maker to help seal any possible leaks. the intake manifold only has about 200 miles on it.

little over 6,000km is the most i've put on a gates belt. personally i don't want to clean the cvt after breaking a belt so i wouldn't let it go much past 10,000km. if you do the work yourself they are cheap enough to replace.
i would assume a gates belt might last longer if you have good airflow in the cvt but i don't know that to be true.

i don't have a smart phone. i figured out my true speed from the electronic radar speed signs.

I can't see water putting a hurt on a valve. I can, however, see it messing with the carb. Have you cleaned it? Idle passage is probably partially plugged. I'd also check for vacuum leaks at the manifold and around where the carb seals to the manifold. All your vacuum lines in good shape? i had a spare carb and intake manifold installed both a month ago. yesterday removed the egr system, to my knowledge their are no other vacuum leaks but i've been wrong in the past. water by itself may not hurt but what about running the engine when it is bucking like a bull? at the time i was very concerned but needed to get to work. regardless i'm still going to pull the head to inspect when i have time. hopefully tomorrow.

all my problems started when i filled my tank with bad fuel. this scoot was running very well until i got water in the tank. it bucked like a bronco for many miles before i finally got all the water out of the tank. scoot seemed fine (don't recall for how long) but then the erratic idle started making it impossible to tune the carb.
since then i been replacing every worn out part i have found. hopefully pulling the head will shine some light on my scooter troubles. i do think running it with water in the tank may have messed up a valve.

i read a thread awhile ago about how someone fixed his speedometer. i don't remember the details, sorry. i've gotten use to mine. i know i'm doing 45mph when my speedo shows 55mph.

hard to know. it has a very slow leak basically since day 1. i'm going to pull the head tomorrow. i'll post pics if anything looks unusual.

yeah, you can bend the pipe assuming it is the right length.

Something that confuses me is how come it will rev past 7500 on the center stand? But while riding not past 7500 engines will always produce less rpm's under a load... if you really think it is under performing then i would clean out the cvt. you may have to take apart the clutch. small fragments of a broken belt can jam the clutch and variator.

I can't see the pics at work and I won't have time to look at them until Saturday evening. Does it look like the spring from a ball point pen? If so, it's the lip spring from an oil seal. the pieces are oval but yes it does look like it may have been a spring.

You know.... we were talking about metal in the oil.... Pull the cam and take a good hard look at the valve springs. Maybe it broke one. Any nasty noises? i haven't noticed any unusual noise. it just has an erratic idle and gets a little better once hot. i'll do that tomorrow and report back.

well back to the drawing board... it is running better but still isn't right. still seems to have a vacuum leak. i wonder if the valves are damaged?

Not sure what engine you have, my experiences are from the 139qmb, and it looks like it doesn't even belong in the engine anywhere...period, IMO. 157QMJ
