10000 km on my scoot and I'm on my second belt, the first one was a el cheapo one and broke at 2000 or 3000 km, can't remember, then I put a Gates Power link on and it has been running with that belt since. I know Gates are most likely to wear down the walls instead of brake, but how do you know if your belt needs to be replaced if it is not broken?

I check the belts by taking the CVT cover off then I gently squeeze the belt between the variator and clutch to see how much slack there is in the belt, if there is an inch or more of slack I replace it. A new belt will have almost no slack, so I figure an inch of slack makes it a spare belt to me haha.

Your rpms will be WAY higher with a belt that is worn thin. Measure the width of the belt-- I believe around 16mm maybe 15mm is danger zone.
I can't remember what mm mine wore down to, that scoot forum is no longer around and neither is the belt.

little over 6,000km is the most i've put on a gates belt. personally i don't want to clean the cvt after breaking a belt so i wouldn't let it go much past 10,000km. if you do the work yourself they are cheap enough to replace.
i would assume a gates belt might last longer if you have good airflow in the cvt but i don't know that to be true.

I usually replace them when they measure less than 18mm thats for a 20mm wide, much more than that and your RPM will be greatly effected..also chances of breakage are higher.
I would do it once a season just for safe keeps....they get dry after a few years if not used.Good to know a cheap no name will last 2-3K km...great for a back up under the seat to get ya home in a jam.
I run an 842-20-30 and can change it right on the road with no special tools,,its long enough that it will slip over the variator as long as you squeeze the clutch open as far as it will go to drop the belt down.I have a long case 157QMJ.

I always counter this by using heavier roller weights . in the past I would change my belt between 2 & 3k miles. That's pretty soon for a gates Kevlar , but it does leave me with a ton of good spares, lol. I usually buy two belts for the season.

With a genuine SYM belt (made my Mitsuboshi i think), i can get around 16,000 KM (10,000 miles). When i bought a replacment belt that also made by Mitsuboshi (but in china), it only last around 8,000 KM (5000 miles) before i had to change it. It started to have too much cracks.
