I live in tucson Arizona. You would be surprised at what the sun and heat can do to a tire sitting outside in five years. You may think twice about driving on it at freeway speeds for hours on end.

gas smell
by: teskow - Sept 20, 2013 9:13:58 GMT -5

I have a Linhai 300 that gives off a gas smell after riding for a while and I stop at a stop sign. It only smells after stoping and is a very hot day. Any ideas where the smell is coming from. There are no leaks or weeping loose fuel lines. I am thinking maybe the carburetor over flows. Help.

Older airplanes without oil filters and only a screen recommend change every 25 hours. Of course a new engine needs to be changed more often until it washes all the grinding compounds and milling chips out of the engine. If you let the first oil change sit for a couple of weeks and carefully pour off the top you will see much debris settled on the bottom. After the engine is washed out and broken in you won't find that to be the case any more.

I set my valves a bit loose then the recommended tolerance. Is there a downside to this other than a bit clicking valve lash noise?

How much better gas mileage will I gain if I go from a carburetor 250cc to a 250cc fuel injected machine?

On my Linhai 300 I had to remove lots of plastic, battery etc, literally the whole rear section to remove the tub to get at the engine. The last time I had the tub out I split the front 1/2 from the rear 1/2 so I don't have to remove the whole tub (rear section) now to get at the engine. It was a bit of work but now I don't have to remove much to get the front portion of the tub out. I have no idea why the designers didn't do it that way as I see no structural loss by having it split.I can now get the front portion of the tub off, exposing the engine in 15 min. or so. I also eliminated the gas shock that was supposed to hold up the seat but was weak and twisted the seat anyway so I just eliminated it. I now hold the seat up with a stick. The same one I use to measure the fuel level. It is accurate and the fuel gage isn't Disconnecting the gas shock was a pain to deal with in getting the tub out, it isn't any more now. KISS engineering is good.

I ended up putting an electric fuel pump on my scoot. It still would not deliver fuel flow to the carb. It ended up being that the fuel filter had a hole in it from corrosion and it was sucking air. I may not even have had a bad vacuum fuel pump but am not sorry that I installed an electric pump as I read about lots of problems with them. A nice thing about an electric fuel pump it that if the carburetor evaporates dry or you work on it and the bowl is dry the starter doesn't have to be run to pump fuel to fill it. I live in a hot a hot dry climate carb can evaporate dry quit quickly. If you run out of gas the electric fills the carb quickly.

No slug, The engine moves around a lot and vibrates quite a bit. If your bracket is to the frame and holding the carb steady something will crack or break. It will either be the manifold or the flex connection between the carb and the manifold. The bracket should be from carb to engine so they move together, just not to something that does not move in unison with the engine.

I have a neat way to improvise a parking brake on my machine. I have a horseshoe nail, I believe mine is actually a tapered cement nail that is wedge shaped that I use to put in the crack of the brake lever that opens up when the hand brake is applied. Just apply the brake hard, place the wedge in the crack and you have a parking brake. I use it all the time when parking downhill a bit as my machine will roll forward while on the side stand. One would also have to look to see it if you didn't know it was there which will prevent anyone from rolling it up on a trailer or such to steal it.

Take some of the fluid and put it on a sheet of paper and compare it to the various fluids in the scooter and it will be easy to match up the leaking fluid with the color of the drip. This works well on automobiles too.

I have a Linhai 300 that I had trouble getting up on the center stand so I drove the rear wheel up a wedge 2 by 6 and that made it easy. I got tired of that so cut some off the stand legs to make them shorter so I didn't have to lift the scooter as far up to get it up on the stand, much easier now. This is an involved operation and welding is required to re-attach the pads. Now when on the center stand the rear wheel is only about 1/2 inch off the floor instead of 1.5 inches. Just be careful not to cut too much off or it won't pick the wheel off the ground.

I am wondering if a bit of graphite rubbed on to sliding parts may be beneficial.
