The headlight on my NC50 went out, and I can't figure out why. I know the bulb is fine because occasionally it will come back on and go off again. I've checked all the connections in the wiring harness and everything is connected. I cleaned all the corrosion with emery board and di-electric grease. All my other electronics work, but my headlight doesn't. I'm terrible with electrical stuff.

I'd like to put a performance exhaust on it, but I can't find one that fits the NC50.

What aftermarket carbs are available to fit the Honda Express? I need to replace my carb, but OEM carbs on ebay are very pricey, and if I'm going to spend $80 to $100 for a carb, I want it to be a high performance carb.

This is how my friend hauls a non running scooter. Not very safe, but interesting. Attachments:

I'm working on getting my '81 Honda NC50 running good. One of the problems I'm having is the exhaust seems to be clogged, probably with carbon buildup after 32 years of being run with crappy quality oil. Is there any way to get rid of that buildup without cutting open the exhaust and re welding it, or should I just put on a new exhaust?

I was riding along, cruising at about half throttle, and I slowly started losing power, and finally stalled. I tried starting it again, but it would not start. I noticed very little resistance on the kick starter, so I knew I had lost compression. I took the head and the cylinder off and there was a lot of burn marks on the side of the piston below the rings, and both the head and base gaskets were shot. The cylinder looks ok, but there is so much carbon built up around the exhaust port I would have to use a dremel to get rid of it! Fortunately, a friend of mine sold me a brand new top end kit for $75. So, my little Honda should be back on the road again soon.

My '81 Honda NC50 has a vacuum operated automatic choke, and it seems to be stuck on. It runs fine without an air filter (I obviously don't run it like that except for short tests), but even with my high flow filter it bogs down after about half throttle and "four strokes" really bad. Two days ago it was running fine. Does anyone know about those old vacuum operated chokes? Also, I want to replace the carb with one that has a manual choke. Does anyone know what to do about the vac lines coming off the cylinder head? Could this be anything besides the auto choke? I've already tried adjusting the A/F and the position of the needle.

Well, I did the unthinkable. I traded my T3 for something I've wanted ever since I've been riding scooters, a 1981 Honda Express NC50. It needs some work, mostly cosmetic, but it runs really well. It has 5600 miles on it and it sat in a garage for most of it's life. The two main issues are my head and tail lights don't work, so I'm using bicycle lights, and my oil injector doesn't seem to be working so I have to premix. Everyone keeps asking me "Why did you trade your nice new scooter for that little bike that's as old as you are?" I just tell them that if I take good care of it, that Honda could still be running in another 30 years, while the TaoTao, although a still a good bike" will likely be long gone in 30 years. Here's a pic of my new Japanese friend. Attachments:

I swapped my all steel exhaust for a GY6 stock aluminum exhaust, and it runs good, despite a small leak, but when I let off the throttle, it backfires really loud. I had a friend driving behind me and he said visible flame was shooting out my exhaust. I set the A/F screw properly, and I don't think it's running lean, but I'll do a plug chop tomorrow just to be sure. Is there any other cause besides running too lean that can cause backfiring on deceleration, and am I in danger of turning my piston into a melted glob?

Well, the guy decided he wants me to rebuild it. I have the top end torn down and the thing had obviously been run out of oil. The cylinder is scored and the piston is burned to a crunchy crisp. The main and rod bearings seem ok though. I may be able to polish the inside of the cylinder because it's not scored that badly. He gave me the money to get a new piston, rings, gaskets, airbox, and ignition coil (it's getting very weak spark as well). We'll see what happens.

My scoot runs just fine, until I top off the fuel tank. Then it bogs down and sometimes stalls when I come to a stop. It backfires sometimes as well. After a few minutes of riding it doesn't do it anymore. What could this be?

Oh, and I was wrong about the engine. It is a JOG/Minarelli 1E40QMB.

He may give me the scooter for parts if he decides not to pay to have it repaired. If he does, then I may be able to gradually rebuild it as money allows.
