Tires

I think the manufacturing date should be plainly displayed on the tire, not buried in a code, that most people don't know exists. If the expiration date was an agreed upon date, that should also be displayed on the tire, in the open and labelled as such. JMHO.

I've got that same windshield on my TaoTao. The mounting hardware is kinda flimsy and the brackets bend at speed. It's ok, but, I have to push it back-up straight evry once in a while.

Admittedly rhetorical question, If the age of the tire is so important, which I believe it is, why do the manufacturers, and DOT make it so you have to cypher the code to determine the date. Why isn't it clearly identified on the tires?

[replyingto=scooterb]scooterb[/replyingto]Interesting, my 2010 TaoTao, does not match the VIN decoding on several points. The model designation does not appear on the list, I have a air cooled CVT with a belt drive and the VIN decoding says liquid cooled chain drive, the origin code is L5N not L9N.n Well at least the plant location code is correct.

Come on down to Central Florida, great riding weather all winter. Well except for a little wind from time to time. I wish I had my Reflex down there, but, the Tao Tao will have to do. The major problem is that many of the roads are 65mph, and the residents down there will blow you off the road.

It sounds to me like you're not getting enough fuel delivery to supply the carburator, and your carburator bowl is running dry. Since you have a petcock, you probably don't have a fuel pump. have you checked for a fuel filter and made sure of the routing of your fuel lines and that there is no kinking? Are the fuel lines original (chinese) or have you changed them. And, I know it is a new carburator, but is the float level set correctly? Before you do anything you need to know I'm not a scooter mechanic, but, I've been around vehicles for a long time.

I've got a 2010 Tao Tao 150 with 6,800 km on it. I've had to replace the voltage regulator and two batteries, and the tires. I replaced the fuel lines, and replaced the plug with an iridium, based on info on the ScootDawg site. I've had pretty fair reliability out of it, except that before I put lock-tite on many of the bolts, things had a tendancy to loosen and fall off. I try to use non ethanol gasoline and have had to run Sea Foam through the carburator due to some bogging down issues, and I adjusted the valves. I just let it set from early April until last week, and it started on the third try. Oh, I also put a windshield on it. I run it in central Florida, and end-up having to run WOT most of the time. Before I adjusted the valves, it would just shut down after running WOT for a while, but then, it would restart and run ok. It hasn't done that since I adjusted the valves. I've clocked it at 58 mph GPS, while the china meter was showing 70. I did buy a Honda Reflex to do more highway riding, but kept the Tao Tao in Florida where I ride it near Sebring all winter.

[replyingto=scooterb]scooterb[/replyingto]The original battery was about 6 months old when the voltage regulator over charged it, and I had the shop change it when the replaced the regulator. That battery, a no name, lasted about a year. I think it was a real cheapy.
I used the specs on a post on the Scoot dawg board to adjust the valves. I think it was .004 and .008, but I'm not sure. It's been running good since, but it was stalling at idle before I adjusted them.
So far, no issues with the coil.
Enjoy the ride! And don't wreck like I did on my Honda.

I've got 6,800 km on my 2010 TaoTao, and so far, other than pdi stuff, I've had to replace the voltage regulator and two batteries, and the tires. I think the performance increased with the iridium plug I put in, and definitlely improved with the valve adjustment. The carb seems to be pretty sensitive to ethanol in the gas and my high speed jets clogged, until I put in some Sea Foam. It sa from early April until last week, and with a little coaxing, it fired right-up on the third try.
You could adjust the valves during the PSI, but still figure on doing it again after break-in, or in my case at about 5,000 km.
Make sure you tighten all the bolts, inclusing exhaust manifold, and muffler brackets. I had a real problem with stuff loosening-up and falling off. Trust me, Lock Tight is your friend. Bolts I know I tightened still loosened-up until I put Lock tight on them.
So far I've enjoyed my Tao Tao, which I got used with 400 km on it, but I did get a little frustrated this winter, when I started having issues with the ethanol gas, and ended-up buying a Honda Reflex, too.

I've got a 2005 Reflex Sport, and while it doesn't seem to take off like a rocket, it keeps winding until well past 70mph (I haven't gone any faster than 75, but it feels like it would). My glove box lines-up fine and doesn't rattle, and it's been dropped twice, once by me. This scoot is so smooth, and comfortable to ride, I really feel much more secure on it than I do my 150. I noticed when taking off, it only goes to about 4,500 rpm until it gets to 45-50 mph, while my 150 seems to rev a lot higher. I think that's what's keeping it from being a real screamer at take-off. Other than that, it has plenty of power. I would have no issues riding it on the interstate, where I would never consider doing that with my 150.
Oh, did I say, I love my Reflex?

I dropped my scooter over 10 weeks ago. I was wearing a helmet, but shorts and short sleeve shirt. I'm still healing. Fortunately, I did not hit my head, but sprained my shoulder, bruised my hip, and got lots of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree road rash on one leg and both arms. Trust me, recovery from road rash is not a pleasant thing pretty disgusting, actually. It was an oozy, gooey, bloody mess for about 8 weeks. Other than the thousands of dollars for the hospital, mostly covered by insurance, I have spent $300 - $500 in bandages, Tegaderm, and other medical supplies. Fortunately, nothing got infected, but it was touch and go for a while. Proper clothing and/or armor would have made a huge difference. When I slid on my belly, my denim shorts and shirt took the beating and I did not get any rash where covered. Oh, I was doing 40-50 when I went down. Just going to the store for a minute, no need to dress-up, right?

This may be JMHO, but, 200 lbs, 50 cc, steep hill? It aint gonna be pretty. I'm about 200 lbs, and my 150cc Tao Tao struggles on hills. Fortunately, it's in Florida, now.... no hills.

I have one on my 150cc Tao Tao, in Florida. Where we stay in the winter is surrounded by orange groves. When thy bring in the bees, to pollinate the oranges, trust me, you want to have a windshield. It's popular opinion in the area that the bees always hit you stinger first.

Can't say too much about the 250 cc chinese scooters, but the Linhai, was a nice looking bike. I bought a used 2005 Honda Reflex Sport this winter, and I've put 1,600 trouble free miles on it since I bought it. It only had 1,400 miles on it when I bought it, and other than a few scratches and such from being dropped, it runs and rides like a new bike. By the time I had this may miles on my Tao Tao 150cc chinese bike it had been in the shop a couple of times and I was well acquainted with how to remove the plastic.
You may pay a little more, but IMHO if you need reliability, buy a Honda.
