howdy, i'll comment on the size of rider and such with the bv350. i'm over 300 pounds and just now completed a 660 mile round to see an aging uncle. i basically checked the oil, and put some air in the tires and set out. i rode over 4 mountain passes, lotsa twistys and through the cold with narry a concern. got 60 mpg at up to 80 mph including over 65mph UP the passes. i have put 7500 miles on in 10 months and only had the reccomended service. that is only the first oil change and adjust stuff since new. it is more nimble and quicker than the burgy and gets better mpg. i do recognize the validity of the lack of dealers though any dealer can handle the service for the piaggio.

howdy, when i say aggressive, i mean take control of the situation, not let the situations take control of you. i don't mean aggressive as in waving a gun around or something. be pro-active. ride to be seen. if i see someone waiting to enter the highway and i'm being screened off so that i might not be seen, i'll move to the side of the lane so as to become visible. the other day i pulled onto the road behind a couple motorcycles traveling together. when i cam up behind them, i moved to the outside of the lane so that traffic coming up behind can see that there is someone ahead of me rather than riding directly behind so that someone might try to pass, not reallizing that there are two vehicles to go around. etc.

howdy and welcome to the forum. a write up and pictures to put in the "it is the ride---really" section would be great. i'm heading out tomorrow for a ride of 340 miles each way and will probably involve at least two overnighters--in a motel. i need to visit an uncle who will likely not be around next year and the scoot is my choice of transportation. weather is looking good with highs in the 60's and lows in the 30's. i have two mountain passes to go over each way so that will be colder in the mornings.

howdy, i won't judge the other guy on wrenching and not knowing whether you'd get home from work or to work for the "joy" of riding chinese(or other bikes like the old lucas electrics on the bso or triumph") but i checked my air pressure today befor heading out for a 700 miles round trip in the next few days and it was a major project for me. does that mean i'm not a real scooterist? i can't break down because i can't walk more than a mile or so without danger so should i give up riding two wheels? tha's not the decision i made. i buy the most reliable scoots i can find, then drive conservatively and find a dealer for servicing my ride. by your definition, i'm some kind of low-life that shouldn't be allowed to live and ride a scoot? maybe i'm not welcome on this prestigious forum?

howdy, lol, that looks like a piston that would cause a slight lowering of the compression. you could use a really long nosed spark plug without having interferance problems

howdy, yeh, leo.
the flat floor on the gv was a major goody for us that can't swing the leg anymore. even my bv, i have to tilt a lot to get over the tank. i really agree with your keeping those tires through winter and switching when the heat sets in. we have 110 degree days where i was living when i had the gv so i do know the heat is phenominal on the pavement and transfers to the tire. the trucks i was driving have "super singles" and when they get hot and explode , it's like dynamite. for those who have been in wartime conditions, it certainly makes the heart skip a beat when they blow. i've learned to freeze first, then DECIDE what to do. that few seconds of freeze seems to let things settle down and preserve your choices. i've had a half dozen of 'em let go and had major damage to the flaps and lights etc. i think of it all the time when passing a truck. i tend to stay back till i get an obvious passing opportunity, then bump my speed way up and get it done. we do call the peices of tire remaining on the roadway "'gators" waiting to ambush ya.

howdy, agreed, a two wheeled vehicle is another kettle of fish, i was only responding to the apparent idea that a blow out on a four wheeled (or more) vehicle will cause an accident, which is not so as long as the driver doesn't over-react. one needs to change your driving to adapt to poor tires if indeed you are using them, as in don't bomb the corners where there is a tiny guardrail separating you from a 1000 ft cliff. some uncommon sense is in order.

howdy, do you notice the front end flexing when you sit down on the seat? try holding the front brake and trying to move the scooter forward or back and see if you get any movement of the tire in relationship to the body. it does look as if there is a problem at the top of the shock tubes

howdy leo, i did put 8,000 miles on my grand vista and a good deal was on the freeway at 60+. i had no problem on the original tires and they were not worn out when i sold the scooter. so not to panick , you can get by for a little while. not trying to talk you out of going to the higher rated tires , just relating that i took a couple 300 mile days on the freeway at 65 or so and had no problem---should i "knock on wood"?

howdy, well i'm going to pull the dogs' ear again. i have driven somewhere around three million miles and had blow-outs front , rear, in corners, passing, speeding, etc and it's what the driver does at that moment that sets the tone for the whole incident. an accident is not inevitable. a two wheeled vehicle most certainly has very different potential at that moment. be safe, use the best tires you can find and drive conservativly.
