just to rectify, 'depressed' means not using it. Pressed means using it. So I guess you all mean 'pressed'.
Yes, brake + starter need to be pressed, because it's an automatic. Should the throttle hang, while you start the bike it'll fly off with catastrophic results. That's why you always need to press the brakes while starting.

My stock tires do leak a tiny bit of air, so I need to pump em up every 2 weeks or so...

Sometimes it could be belt vibration. I have that too. Nothing to worry about if it's belt vibration. At a certain speed, your belt may oscillate with other items vibrating in the scooter.

Ok, I know, it's not meant to go this fast, however, this past week I was on a long bridge, with wind in the back. The end of the bridge was a corner, so I was going down the bridge @~60MPH, and while in the corner, I felt the frame flex a little with the road inconsistencies.
I know for one fact, that the ATM50 has a much better frame, than the XTreme XB700-Li that I owned, that began to flex ~25MPH.
However, I never really agreed on feeling unsafe with 10" tires, until last week. The frame, the tires, whatever it was, it felt a little unsafe @60mph. Not because I was going too fast, but because when cornering, the whole structure wasn't making a consistent corner. It was wobbling in the corner, sometimes going in the corner, sometimes wanting to go straight forwards (towards the outside of the lane).
Just letting you guys know, this scooter is a 50cc, and meant to be ridden 35-40MPH. Most people can go 40-45MPH, however when you pump up the tires to 40PSI, and get BP Premium fuel, and 10W40 engine oil, you can easily reach 50MPH when the engine is hot.
At speeds over 60MPH, you're riding almost twice as fast as the bike is meant to go; so if you ever wanted to upgrade it with a bigger engine, know that you won't feel safe at speeds over 60MPH.
Usually I never go over 55MPH, cause it takes a strong backwind to reach those speeds. At 55MPH I still feel safe; not at 60!

There's an adjuster on the end near the drum, and some bikes have a second adjustment near the levers; but not always.

could it be your CVT? (usually the whining is only heard at acceleration).

"tight valves are no problem. They allow you to last longer without valve adjustment."..... Might I add, with due respect.. Instead of laughing you could ask why. Just as long as the valves are not over tight, but lightly tapping, you get maximum performance. The only reason why you need a valve adjustment is because the valve adjustment screw, where it touches the valves, wears off, and you need to compensate for that. If they are set to 0.03" instead of 0.05", and the scooter works fine like that, it'll take longer before you need to do your next valve adjustment.

If the battery became hot, it could have damaged it. Just make sure it's not dry. As long as there's water in it, and it functions, I guess a one timer could do no harm. Also, funny thing is, but many dry batteries, shipped from the factory, after pouring the acid in, are almost in a charged status.
I once charged the battery with a car starter battery delivering upto 600Amps. The tiny battery became hand warm over time, and I just disconnected it, when it became warmer than hand warm, and put it in the scoot like that, and started riding. No problems ever since (a good 3 months now).

Florida rain is warm. I just ride in a T-shirt and shorts/pants and get wet.

no, FL has a course for motorcycles, and a separate section for scooters. FL is private schools too, not only DMV.
And in here they provide a motorcycle.

buy 4 diodes, and you can convert ac to dc. not at all that hard. (Graetz bridge).

On my taoTao ATM50 I have ~3000 miles on (almost 4000km) and I think I'm half way through the back tire; meaning, i probably can do another 3k miles on it without failing.

I know here in FL there is a separate license for large sized scooters, and automatic motorcycles. A DL for motorcycles is valid for scooters, but not the other way around (I presume).
I know because when I arrived with my scooter, the lady asked me why I did not sign up for the scooter classes. I told her because I was planning on buying a motorcycle; and needed to be able to ride with gears.
