Had to panic stop..another cager decided to back out on me and when I gripped the rear brakes hard the lever went slack.
I stopped and checked it and the cable isnt broken because I can get the brake to engage but I have to pull it almost to the grip. If I tighten up the nut on the back of the bike it will firm up some. But, what the happened?

Yeah that is the problem with cables, they do stretch, that is why there is an adjuster for you to use. The cable can stretch too far to be adjusted too.

Or...and I see it lots...the splined lever on your brake shaft...in the back on the brake shoe assembly..slipped a few splines ahead. Take out the bolt for the lever...loosen the adjusting nut all the way out....reposition the lever on the shaft and bolt snuggly in place. Then adjust brake slack with the adjustment nut.

There's an adjuster on the end near the drum, and some bikes have a second adjustment near the levers; but not always.
