Hey Guys -- Just picked up my first scoot. It's a 2010 50cc 4-stroke ruckus clone. Came with a box of go-fast parts and has less than 50 miles on it. Doesn't run well, of course. The story I got from the guy is that it was too slow so he bought a bunch of parts and started bolting them on and then never got it to run right. I picked it up for a song. It starts on the first kick but dies when you start to give it gas. I'm no stranger to carbs so I pulled the carb off, disassembled and ran it through my ultrasonic cleaner. Some compressed air, carb cleaner and some wire and I can confidently say that it's clean. Seemed to run better but still not perfect and eventually died while I was fiddling with it and I couldn't get it started again. The problem was obvious when I had gas that started to pour out of the intake side of the car. Anyone have any instructions on what the float level should be? The needle and seat visually look good. Do these go bad/fail? Also --I have two carbs. Both seem very similar but one might be larger. Anyone have a guide or instructions on how I can go about ID-ing them? Here is a picture of one. What is that connection at the bottom of the bowl? It looks like other carbs have a drain port here and a screw to open/close it. This one just has two ports?

Figured out the carb. The brass port on the bowl is a drain and it connects to a line that has a remote petcock on the bottom of the bike. Let's you drain the bowl without removing the carb and without making a mess. Handy!

Gas, carb drain and non brass, the one you have marked vac is the overflow.

Where does the vac hook up? There's a port on the front of my crankcase that looks like it should be hooked up somewhere and I assumed the carb?

You can leave the overflow alone and the vacuum hose or hoses are one the intake manifold the rubber piece the carb is on. The port is probably the valve cover vent leave it open also.

That makes loads of sense. Thanks. I'm going to check it out tonight and I'll let you know what else I find.

Alright, I seem to have everything hooked up and I got the float adjusted so that it doesn't spray gas all over the place, but it still doesn't run right.
It kicks over on the 1st or second try and then dies after 3-5 seconds. Once it gets warm, I can give it full throttle and it doesn't die but if I let it return to idle it dies out again. Too much gas? Too little? How to do I find out? I know that the jets are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN (ran them through 3 cycles in an ultrasonic, soaked in carb cleaner, blew out with compressed air.) Is there an a/f screw that I'm missing?
Here's a video.....

Almost sounds like its lean,,only way to tell is a plug chop.Make sure you have no air leaks on intake, also sounds like the slide might be hanging up,,not sure..are you getting good fuel flow to carb,,maybe tank vent is clogged or fuel pump is flakey.First thing I did was install a petcock and throw that pump in the trash.Still might put a better quality pump on it someday..
I would check valves while I was at it and go over the entire thing with a fine tooth comb,,sounds like a golden screwdriver had it before you did...

Fuel seems to be flowing fine. Every time it dies there is plenty of gas in the clear filter and I can drain gas out of the bowl, its def not starved for fuel.
Intake manifold seems to be fine. There is a vent on the front of the engine that develops vavuum but I was told it should be open?
Any tips on how to check valves?

You can start here...just to rule them out.

If you turn the carb rightside up it's the screw below the brass cap on the left side (if intake is facing back like most scooters). Follow Alleyoop's 4 stroke carb tuning instructions.

Thanks, JerryScript! I'll try to play with that this evening and see if it gets me anywhere. I'll also try and check the valves.

There are a couple other good valve videos on the tube if you look. I found some really cool vids on troubleshooting CDI/coil/starter issues this morning I posted it in the tech contribution section. Let us know how you make out bro..

Hey guys -- Happy to report back with an update. I checked the valves and they were WAY too tight. There was no clearance there at all! Set them to .004 and the scooter seems to run better once it gets going.
My idle is still too high though, the back wheel spins like it's trying to take off. If I adjust the idle down with the adjustment screw, the scooter dies. Any other thoughts?
