So I think I found the problem (but I don't understand it.) My fuel tank has two connections -- the bottom one goes to the petcock and I assume is the supply. The top one also goes to the petcock and I don't understand it's purpose.
If I overfill the tank, this top connection gets fuel in it and the scooter won't run correctly.
If I remove this line from the breather (or vent or whatever the top connection on the tank is) then the scooter races/revs like crazy. Is this the connection you guys say I can remove and cap?

I've had this GY6 scooter for about a year but have never filled the tank up all the way (it doesn't get used much.) Scooter runs/rides great with half a tank of gas but once it's filled all the way up it will die as soon as you start to move (seems like fuel starvation.)
It will run like a banshee on the center stand and you can sit in one place with the brake on and it runs perfectly. Once you start to move you'll move about 20 feet and it just shuts off. Any theories??

Hey Guys, just wanted to update you. Found a hairline crack in the bottom of the intake manifold. Replaced it and now it runs like a dream. Followed the tuning video above and I think my problems are solved. Road it around the block and was hitting 35mph. I'm 220lbs so that seems about right? So.... What's the next way too add a little speed?

Ok guys, I took the carb back out, cleaned it, ran the jets out with a piece of wire and then re-assembled with the filter on this time. (Sorry, all I have is this pod filter.) It does run LOADS better. Takes a lot less gas to keep it going, but it still wants to die.
It's really hard for me to tell if there's possibly a problem with the variator that doesn't let it idle w/o spinning up the rear wheel or if the problem is related to the carb and it not allowing it to idle down.
I uploaded a new video. This is the lowest that I can get the idle, but it will still die if I don't just barely give it gas every few seconds. (I realize there isn't much to see, this is just in case it helps to hear how it is running.)
Thoughts?

The FIRST PROBLEM you have is you do not have an AIR FILTER on the carb. Without one you will never get it to run right. So put on the AIR FILTER you are going to use Air Box or whatever. I saw the VIDEO and it is obvious when it does start and run it is LEAN due to no air filter(NOTICE HOW SLOW WHEN YOU LET GO OF THE THROTTLE IT DROPS THE RPMS) that is because of to LEAN of a condition. So adjusting anything is fruitless. Once you put on the AIR FILTER you will cut some air off and its then that you can do your adjustments. Alleyoop Well... this would have been helpful a few days ago! I've got just a basic pod-filter that was fitted to it. I'll try it with that on there and report back. Thanks!!

I'd be checking the main jet(s) sizes in both carbs. In the video, you are running it with no air filter/box on the carb and what appears to be a performance pipe. It could be running VERY lean right now. Is there a possibility this guy put a Big Bore Kit (BBK) on it? I'd also double check the variator and make sure everything is properly placed in there, if you haven't. I just have a hard time taking other peoples word or trusting their work unless I know them or saw it with my own two eyes. No bbk. I'm going to pull the carb tonight. I didn't see any numbers on the jets when I cleaned it but I will look again. What sizes should be in there?

Glad to hear that you are learning. Did you adjust the air/fuel mixture yet,,that makes a huge difference as well? I set it at 2.5 turns out. Its hard to get it set correctly with the idle so high. There's no tach so I can't tell how fast the idle is, but the rear tire is spinning like crazy and if I use the brake the engine dies.

You said he started to bolt stuff on , what exactly did he add to the scoot ? My carb also has a shutoff at the bowl and at the end of the drain hose. There is a different belt, carb, cdi, coil, variator rubber (not sure what this is called) and pipe. Everything but the pipe has been removed and switched back to stock.

Hey guys -- Happy to report back with an update. I checked the valves and they were WAY too tight. There was no clearance there at all! Set them to .004 and the scooter seems to run better once it gets going.
My idle is still too high though, the back wheel spins like it's trying to take off. If I adjust the idle down with the adjustment screw, the scooter dies. Any other thoughts?

Thanks, JerryScript! I'll try to play with that this evening and see if it gets me anywhere. I'll also try and check the valves.

Fuel seems to be flowing fine. Every time it dies there is plenty of gas in the clear filter and I can drain gas out of the bowl, its def not starved for fuel.
Intake manifold seems to be fine. There is a vent on the front of the engine that develops vavuum but I was told it should be open?
Any tips on how to check valves?

Alright, I seem to have everything hooked up and I got the float adjusted so that it doesn't spray gas all over the place, but it still doesn't run right.
It kicks over on the 1st or second try and then dies after 3-5 seconds. Once it gets warm, I can give it full throttle and it doesn't die but if I let it return to idle it dies out again. Too much gas? Too little? How to do I find out? I know that the jets are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN (ran them through 3 cycles in an ultrasonic, soaked in carb cleaner, blew out with compressed air.) Is there an a/f screw that I'm missing?
Here's a video.....

That makes loads of sense. Thanks. I'm going to check it out tonight and I'll let you know what else I find.

Gas, carb drain and non brass, the one you have marked vac is the overflow. Thanks! So the overflow I'm assuming just connects to a hose that routes to the bottom of the bike, right? Where does the vac hook up? There's a port on the front of my crankcase that looks like it should be hooked up somewhere and I assumed the carb?

Figured out the carb. The brass port on the bowl is a drain and it connects to a line that has a remote petcock on the bottom of the bike. Let's you drain the bowl without removing the carb and without making a mess. Handy!
