All HiVis yellow Helmet Armored jacket Kevlar / armored pants Boots Gloves Last Saturday while wearing all the above HiVis AND riding a yellow reverse trike I had a woman hit me. First words out of her mouth, "I didn't see you"......... Yep, cell phones turn Hi-Viz gear into urban camouflage (probably mistook you for a yield sign.)

In the '80s I punched the back door of a Dodge, while riding a Honda 650, in Oregon. It was at a signal on a main street. I had the green light. 80+ year old woman looked right at me and turned left in front of me against the red.
Gear wasn't what it is now. I flipped over the car, hit my helmet on the curb, and bounced into the grass. The helmet broke, but saved my life. I lost a little hide. I always wear protective gear now..... I have been lucky since then. Only 1 accident, when a woman ran a stop sign, and I laid it down 2 years ago.

I am shocked and chagrined! Truly I thought that there would be more " tshirt, shorts, flipflops n mp3 player" answers. (well, maybe those riders are still in school for a few hours) I wear pretty much the same as the majority, silver mesh slide jacket with reflective piping and armor, modular helmet, armored gloves, jungle combat style boots -I know, I should have stiff leather uppers on them, but I do have to make some concession to the summer heat-, and heat-out body shirt. As has been said, heat-out under the mesh jacket keeps you cooler that a short sleeve shirt in the low humidity desert. In winter, I sometimes change to a heavier coat, but mostly just insert the thermal liner into the jacket. I should get some armor riding pants. That is on my list. Why do I wear this stuff? Because a dismount in traffic at 45mph from the scooter thumps the head and slides the body just as much as a dismount at 45mph from my FJ1200. Good riding, all

The local scooter club bulletin board is full of requests for riders to not show up in shorts and flip flops for group runs. The runs in the summer usually have many riders, and someone always dumps it on every ride. Last year a girl was hurt seriously. She would have kept much more skin if she had the proper riding gear.
There is also a bit of a "group mentality" in large groups. People started ignoring stop signs and signals. Twenty scoots running a red light is just 20 potential fatalities, or tickets at the least. That got the cops on us. Now a few cops show up when the club is spotted on a run.
I quit the rides because people couldn't control themselves. It is much more fun just to ride with a friend.

First words out of her mouth, "I didn't see you"......... Anyone who says they didn't see the person they hit should have their license suspended! If you are in control of a vehicle and you are not aware of what is directly in front of you, then you should not be driving! Speaking as a person who had a suspended license in my youth due to not keeping my insurance paid on time (youthful indiscretions), not having the ability to drive for 6 months is an eye opener these types need!

More red motorcycles and scooters are involved in accidents than other colors. I bought a red scooter and helmet to be visible. I am hoping red is not the death color, just the color most guys that like to ride fast chose. Most of those guys don't last too long before their first "big hurt".

It is really nice to see most members use the proper gear on their scoots. Most accidents happen near home, within 10 minutes of leaving the house. It hurts just as bad to go flying at 35mph from a scooter as from a larger bike if you have the bad luck to crash. The only place I lame out is ankle protection. I wear heavy hiking shoes, but they do not cover my ankles, Too hot in San Diego for boots most of the time. I have a friend who thought that and the sight of his foot split in half between the second and third toe right up to the ankle would give you the willies. His low shoes did not stay on when he got bumped off the 500cc bike at less than 25 mph and he got caught on a sheetmetal sign post. Maybe it was a good thing that he was wearing an open face helmet and was unconscious for a few weeks after this happened. He didn't come too until after his face had started to heal up a bit. No jacket or gloves either so he was pretty messed up with a broken shoulder, chipped elbows, etc. It has been a few years now and he still is not recovered and going through follow-up surguries and therapy. He will never ride again. I will probably mention this one from time to time lest we forget that even an off at 50cc speeds can be a life altering or ending event without a good helmet and safety gear.

I am buying boots...... better to be safe. Have everything else, no reason to get my ankle bone ground off. Your feet don't work without it.

Yep, you can't take the MSF course here in Vegas without helmet, eye protection (assuming it's not a full face helmet), jacket, gloves, and boots. Boots seem to be overlooked by lots of people, but if you think about it, the first thing you attempt to put on the ground when falling is your feet, so they need protection first!
