This is the one that changed my mind about helmets. I used to be against them, believing they restricted your view, and since you have to watch out for cagers, a restricted view was the worst thing. Then this happened: Helmet Protester Dies During Rally Against Helmet LawsI happen to know the NY Senator who introduced their helmet legislation. He is a customer in my restaurant here in Vegas. We had a heated discussion about helmet laws the spanned several months, then the poor guy above met his demise. I have been a helmet champion ever since!

I was an ER tech in my 20's. No helmet is bad JuJu Buana! Brain injuries, ears, nose, scalp, and chin ground off. We saw it over and over again. Murdercycles were what motorcycles were called in the E.R.
Always a helmet for me and always full face.

Always a helmet for me and always full face. i definitely need/want to buy a full face helmet. i took a spill at about 35mph last year doing a face plant in the wet grass sliding about 50 feet. the face shield on my 3/4 helmet was enough protection in that scenario but i don't always ride with it down and probably no match on concrete.

My son gets mad at me when he visits because I make him wear jeans, helmet and glasses. I tell him "son, don't be dumb like your dad". He realized what I was talking about after he saw a spring breaker go down pretty hard. After seeing some of the nuts on scooters and cars I don't ride down to the end of the beach much anymore. I like my little part of the beach where traffic stays the same all year (slow and not much of it). I find myself staying in the neighborhoods a lot more then I use to. Safer that way. i have had 2 minor falls on a scooter. once in the 80's and once just last year. both times not a car in sight. you never know when or how it might happen. could be a pot hole, a dog, a squirrel, gravel, oil... meh, just saying their are many potential hazards not only cagers. and that last minor fall put me out of work for a week. i only had helmet and gloves. bought an armored mesh jacket after that spill. probably would have been back to work sooner if i was wearing it then. I keep comparing my friends 20 mph off that he has not yet recovered from in the two years that have passed to another who was in a 70+ mph off where he got clipped by a passing car and slid down the interstate in a Mesh Jacket, Icon Kevlar Jeans, Full Faced Helmet, Carbon Fiber Armored gloves and Riding Boots who walked away from it with some very minor bruises and some scrapes. Yes he still would have been hurt or killed if he had been run over even with the armor but it did make the difference between returning to a normal life that very day and years of recovery in his case.

I wear a armored Tourmaster jacket, Nolan n44 modular helmet gloves and knee guards under my jeans. I also wear a pair of Cortech riding boots that look like high top sneekers but provide great protection. I didn't always use this much gear but age and experience has taught me I'm no longer indestructable.

Dress for the fall. Even in HiVis and on a yellow trike I got hit two weeks ago, the gear let me walk away. Lid, armor jacket a pants , boots and gloves every time. It's a personal choice I rode my harley clad in black for almost 40 years and no amount of preaching changed my mind. That said a bathroom slip and fall left me a inc paraplegic. No I wasn't wearing my gear in the can ! Go figure you can only be so safe .........

Gee tarkus, whyever not? You mean you don't wear your helmet everywhere? Sadly, some folks would point at your slip and use that as an excuse to not wear protective gear on their bikes. "See, you can get hurt just in your bathroom." Or walking. Or falling out of bed. (yes, sadly, I've read both of those) I will continue to argue for wearing gear. Just like I argue for wearing seatbelts in cars. Mine doesn't move 'til everyone's buckled up. >'Kat

(the view was like one of those wheel mounted cameras) Anyways, if I didn't have a full face helmet half my head would have been sanded off. (Needless to say I ended up without a scratch.)

I think y'all may have missed my point. Its a reason to wear gear. Bad poop can happen anywhere BUT when one knows an activity has risk one should be prepared for it. Or be willing to pay the price.
With all the "what ifs" in life out of our control we should take charge of the things that we can control.

Man I was thinking about Gary Busey. You beat me to it. We see the results on "Worlds Dumbest" every few weeks.

The other members were rightfully razzing me about ankle protection. I was watching some crash videos on youtube at a friend's house. The shoes go flying right away. In almost every video you can see the riders tennis shoes flying through the air. I changed my footware to something that laces up over the ankles. If you don't have to walk in them, you can find some inexpensive armored m/c boots from China on eBay. Don't expect arch support, but the armor is pretty good. They arrived in 2 days, cool. Keep some walking shoes in your bag.

One of my co-workers has 2 Ducati and a Harley (Harley was to please his Dad) and he keeps a pair of riding boots in his top case or saddle bags of each bike. Changes to loafers, dress shoes or sneakers at his destination and puts on the boots before he doffs his jacket, gloves and helmet. He usually wears Icon Kevlar Jeans or a pair of Kevlar Dockers style pants. I keep my eyes open for sales at the local Cycle Gear as their Sedici line has a lifetime Guarantee and their Bilt a 5 year both with free over the counter replacements. On gloves especially I am going with Sedici. Rain suits always seem to get leaks in the seat of the pants after the days or 12 months expires so I am going to go with their Bilt rain suit just so I will be able to get replacement pants at no additional cost for the next 5 years.

There was a rider who posted here about being bombed on the head with "Bird stuff" We said "wear your helmet" He then reported he wasn't on his scoot, but at a backyard barbecue. To which we replied "no excuses" wear your helmet!
