Well I bought a used scoot off craigslist...(again). It ran fine when i test drove it, It also ran fine on the damn near 40 mile trip home. I gave the dude 420 bucks for it. Well the next day I drove it somewhere.. it ran fine, then on the way back home I stopped at a red light and when I hit the throttle it bogged down and wouldnt pick up speed at all whatsoever. It would start and idle perfectly like it was brand new. well the least few days I have been fiddling with it. I took most of the carb apart and tried to clean it.. ( I couldn't get the top part off that is kinda round and black, because some idiot stripped the two screws out). To make a long story short. alot of stuff has been replaced and I adjusted the valves, even though they really were ok to start with. Here's the weird part.... When I take off, if I cover the inlet holes on the airbox with my hand it will start to pick up speed, until I get to about 5 thousand RPM and then it will lose power until I take my hand off and then it will take off like a bat out of . ?! I have tried every setting you can possibly do with the a/f mixture screw. im almost certain that I need to replace this carb. is that everyon else's thoughts aswell???

I changed out the Cdi and the coil and wire.. didnt do anything with stator. nope, I have not checked for a plugged exhaust, but I feel it flowing out just fine, I dont think thats the problem. The float looked fine when I took the carb apart... I am thinking about getting a new carb, but I am seriously broke and I don tthink I have enough money to buy one . I am so pissed off that I just spent all the money that I saved up to buy a damn scooter that doesnt work worth a . this is supposed to be my only transportation.

I realize this is going to sound ridiculous but..... did you check the fuel filter or replace it? I had almost the exact thing happen to me when I bought mine. Ran perfectly during the test drive. Started it and turned it off probably 8 or 10 times while at the PO's house. Paid the man, hopped on and drove off into the sunset - for 2 miles. Sitting at a stop light it bogged down and when the light turned green, I tried to give it gas and it just died. Pushed it to the side of the road. Would start right up and immediately die.
Turned out to be a combination of 2 things: 1. Fuel in the tank was old and had de-stabilized. The little bit that sat in the fuel filter had gotten gummy thanks to the ethanol. 2. Fuel Filter was partially gummed up only allowing a little bit to flow freely. As the demand increased, the engine would bog down, starving for fuel.
Worth a shot anyway....
Either way, good luck!!

[replyingto=millsc]millsc[/replyingto]I know this doesn't make sense, but can you please tighten the spark plug cable. I know if the spark plug cable comes loose it shouldn't behave like your describing but this is exactly what happened to me, I totally freaked out because it kept happening until i tighter the spark plug cable which was coming loose on bumps.

The first year I had my Xingyue, it acted similarly. One of the problems DID turn out to be the carb. Apparently, the Chinese fuel lines deteriorated from the USA gas, and messed up the carb so I couldn't get it cleaned and running right. I replaced it with a Mikuni carb off eBay for around $40. That got it running right, but during that first year, I still had to do the typical China-scoot mods.
Even though your petcock seems OK, I'd still replace it with a manual on-off one. The vacuum petcocks seem to cause endless irritations at speed.
My scoot also had MAJOR problems with the stock air-filters. Before modding anything, I'd quickly pull the entire air-filter assembly off the carb mouth, and see if by chance it runs much better. If it DOES, a simple UNI-sock filter might cure most of your problem. It's a long shot, but takes only minutes to try, and it might make a big difference. Just don't ride it with no air-filter for long.
Wish I could be more help, but what you're experiencing can be caused by many different things. Do try removing the entire air-filter setup from the carb though. I found my particular scoot would NOT run right with the stock "tuba" air intake. These engines can be a booger to get just right.
Sincerely,
Leo in Texas

I close off all the air holes, It will take off... start picking up speed. I have to let off the holes and it will run wide open.. Think people think... would cause this?!
