I am looking at a 2008 Black Burgman 400 with 31,000 miles on it. The price is around $2500. Can I get some feedback on what to be aware of on this particular year's model? I think the bluebook value is right in this ball park so the price seems fair. I'm concerned about any known mechanical issues that you all may be aware of. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

The 400's are pretty trouble free. Check the weep hole on the water pump, if it's going you'll see greenish trails...

I purchased a 2008 400 earlier this year with many extra's for $2400. It had 8,000 miles on it when I purchased it. I think you very well might be able to offer him lower than what he's asking.
I've had two issues which are very likely rare ones. First, the collar on the rear axle was stuck. I was not able to remove the rear tire. Took it to a mechanic and they too had lots of trouble. But somehow they finally got it off. Second, I have a leak with the overflow coolant tank. I've poured coolant in and it runs right out onto the ground. Two possibilities...1-it has cracked or 2-the hose has come off, which I think is less likely. I have not experienced any over heating despite the problem.

If the bike isn't obviously damaged even at 31,000 miles the $2,500 could be a fair price depending on how well maintained it is. If the coolant tank isn't leaking and the maintenance has been kept up with they are a very solid bike. One mechaninc I have used says the 400cc engine in the Burgman is basically a Ninja 800 cut in half and a very bullet proof design.

Rocky Ninja is a Kawasaki and a 4 cylinder. Burgman is a 400cc Suzuki thumper. It feels a lot more like a dirt bike engine at least somewhat only not as mean...
your mechanic is confused... It is bullet proof

[replyingto=rockynv]rockynv[/replyingto]Thanks everyone for your input.
I went and looked at the scooter. It seems that the owner turned it over to a dealer to handle the sale. It was really nice and well kept. Engine sounded nice and everything worked on the bike including all the digital instruments on the dash. It even had a Givi side saddle already mounted and the passenger backrest. I did talk the dealer to lower the price comparing other 2008 with much less mileage selling for about the same price. However, the dealer has several hundred dollars of prep fees that they have added on and with taxes and everything else, I'm looking at close to $3000 out the door. Still considering it. If the engine is as bullet proof as everyone says, I think it should be good for many miles.

It is bullet proof Russian mechanic who was quite good but suffered in the language department. Suzuki does trade engine blocks with other makers so he could be right about the Ninja connection. Some Suzukis are sent out with engines modified for them by Aprilia where Suzuki cast the blocks to Aprilia specs and then sent them out to Aprilia for machining and outfitting with the hard parts.

I suppose anything is possible but 1/2 of 4 is 2 not 1. The only 2 cylinder Ninjas are all displaced around 500 or less. Kawasaki never made an 800 ninja and the haven't made a 750 even since the mid 's. The bore and stroke on a ZX-9R (closest to 800 they had) is 75 x 50 for quick revving horsepower and the Suzuki has a nice square 81 x 77.6. I don't know for sure but I think the 400 Burgman engine was designed for a scooter. Any way none of this all matters. What matters is that we agree it is a solid motor... Maybe they made a 800 2 cylinder Ninja for Russia only that they don't admit to...

I'd ask for a few hundred off and see what happens.
An 07 Burgman 650 posted on CL here the other day from a dealer asking $3600 on a 25,000 miler. Not in my wheelhouse, but someday if a 2012 or newer 400 posts for cheap I might pick one up for the standard ABS over what I have now.

scootnwinn - Don't forget the Kawasaki Ninja 650R and EN-6R, both 650cc parallel twins as well.

Yes you are correct that's where the vague statement "all displaced around 500 or less" came from. Still not the nice square bore and stroke you see on the Burgman (both 83 X 60) If anything it may be closest to 1/2 a 800 Suzuki Intruder as it has the squarish bore and stroke like most many V-twin metric cruisers... Sorry as a long time Suzuki fan I can't accept any possibility of Kawasaki lineage Edited to add the appropriate level of vagueness Rob

Suzu-ki/Kawasa-ki hard core Harley riders would classify them all Yamasu-ki's (ask Hildo). All related to one degree or another under co-ops in Japan.
How many years did we hear about Sony no Baloney only to find a Matsushita product behind the label.

That's a ton of miles for a 400cc single cylinder. $3000 is too much. That's half the money for a new one and getting 25% of the bike. I'd say $2000 plus tax or keep looking...

I've seen burgmans with just over 4k miles being sold for between 3600 and 4000 (add 500-1000 on additional taxes and dealerfees). Just saying. Burgmans are solid. They probably do 50k miles problem free, and after that a few things to fix, and probably give you another 5-10k problem free riding, with every 5-10k miles one or another thing breaking 'till you're at 75k miles where you probably could continue, but where the reliability might be questionable.
