I'm new to this forum and don't have a scooter yet. I got my motorcycle license in 1988 and rode street bikes until 2002. I always thought I would get another bike but until now I just never got around to it.
Anyway... I really want a scooter instead of a motorcycle and I have it narrowed down to two choices. I can get a brand new 2012 KYMCO Super 8 150 or a 2006 Yamaha Morphus with 4000 miles and a few scratches. They are within a few hundred dollars of each other in price and I like the looks and fit of both. I don't plan on any highway riding nor do I plan on making any modifications, just normal maintenance.
I've never had a scooter before and I'm not sure what to expect. I look forward to putting around on all the nice country roads around here. I really like this forum and thanks in advance for your input.

Id go for the Kymco,,they are a very good quality Taiwan bike,,way better than a Taotao or other Chinese scoot,,plus you dont know how the guy treated that Yamahopper the first 4k miles,,you will be very happy with the Kymco...and it comes with a nice warranty to boot.

Thanks for the reply jerseyboy. I do like the 2 year warranty on the Kymco. I also like the fuel injection and liquid cooled 250cc engine on the Yamaha.

I would go with the kymco, especially if you aren't doing highway riding. The 150 will have plenty of power and kymcos are pretty great.

I am looking from motorcycles, new to scooters as of about 8 months ago. I had a 652cc Suzuki Savage, now I ride a Vespa 150. I like K.I.S.S. -- Keep It Simple. The Morphous has 170 pounds more bulk than the Kymco. The Kymco stands up so you can see around, the Morphous is 6 inches lower. I rented a Vespa before buying -- after riding I didn't want throwing a leg over a saddle. The Kymco is a easy step through bike, the Morphous is a ... different. I do not want the extra garbage of radiator water pump flush fill etc. of liquid cooling. I have had air-cooled cars and bikes in how climates and they have no problems. I like "no problem." Not to mention it is nice getting an virgin. And a 150 can go on the highway. |

A 150 can ride on the highway, I was just making the point that if those speeds arent necessary, the 150 is a better option.

Both are good scooters... I too would lean toward the new Kymco though. I rode one at a local dealership and liked it a lot. I think you'll like scooters. I have been riding for more than fifty years, mostly big bikes; Harley, BSA, and an assortment of mid-sized Japanese bikes. I wasn't sure I'd like the radically different scooters, but I do like the no-shift trannies and nimble handling. Totally different from big motorcycles, but in a good way.
I think most cycle riders adapt well to scooters.

I'm going to be the odd one here. I'd go for the Morph.
Yes, it's used. But it has more power, just in case you do decide to take the highways more than you plan. And it's got a longer wheelbase, which does take away some agility but should give more comfort. Plus it's got that awesome style!
Just talk with the owner a while and get a feel for him. Trust you gut, if he seems honest or squirrelly. Just because it's used doesn't mean it was dogged. I bought my first laptop off eBay. I emailed the seller several times and had a real good feel from his replies. He was an honest guy who'd upgraded and was selling the old one. Period. Same as any regular folk. Not everyone selling a used item is hiding rough treatment.
Final thought here--have you actually sat on each? Have you gotten to drive them? If not, ask to test-drive. You might decide you hate how one handles once it's moving. If so, and you like both still, then go with your heart. Which have you been thinking about more the past day/s?

WOW!! Thanks everybody for all the replies. I wish I could test ride both machines but I don't think the Kymco dealer allows it. The Yamaha is at a different dealership, I don't know their test ride policy. I am going to throw out low-ball offers and see if I get any bites. Was hoping to go today, but my wife and I are going to look at a Halflinger mare for her this afternoon. If she gets the horse, I get the scooter.

Hello,
I have a 2011 Kymco Super 8 and I LOVE it!!! So I would naturally recommend you go with the Super 8. I have over 4,500 miles on mine and I never had any trouble. Believe it or not, I check my valves every month or so and I still have not had to adjust them at all.
It is just an awesome bike....and quite a bit of power!

Thank you everyone for your input.
I just got back from the Yamaha dealer and they would hardly move at all on the price of the Morphous.
That being said, I have researched the prices on these and they are not out of line with what they are asking.
I gotta say, sitting on the Morphous is like sitting on a huge wave-runner or snowmobile or something, the weight is really low and easy to control. The Kymco dealer has lots of Super 8 150's, there is only one Morphous for sale around here.
Tomorrow I may go look at a 2008 Aprilla Scarabeo 500. The Aprilla is a little less money than the Morphous and a bit more than the Super 8.

The Aprillia's cheaper than the Morph? And twice as strong? I dunno, sounds like a really good deal there.
Although dang, but I love that swoopy look. If there'd been a Morph available when I decided to buy, no contest I'd be Morphing around instead of Pigging out. No offense to Peej but there's only one Morph-style.
If they're at dealers, then I wouldn't worry so much about the used factor. Just make sure they went over the scoot/s and checked out everything. Like car dealers and their 30-point inspections.
If you can't decide, I still say think back the past couple days on which bike you've thought about most. That's the one to choose.
