The rear shocks jar hard on these Louisiana roads, too hard on a bad back! I ride single, with 29# in rear tire, 28# in front, Jonway YY250T 2012 model. My weight is 220#, scooter is stock on running gear, no chassis mods. How does one modify shocks for a smoother ride? Or modify a air value for adjustment? All help is welcomed and given thought! And please do not suggest moving to Texas, I Was raised up in Odessa! Attachments:

My Znen has the factory recommended air pressures. I just put on a new exhaust, so I had to change the shocks to the firmest settings, which required me to unmount each shock from the scooter, since I couldn't move the air-box side at all, and the exhaust side didn't have the clearance to move far enough. I'm about 230, ~250 geared up with the knapsack on full of stuff. WI roads are horrible, everywhere. I probably will try the shocks are one and then two notches softer. If I don't hit the muffler with the side fender, ok. If I still do, I may have to try and straighten the last header bend so the muffler is lower. Scooter tires are small enough I won't try to lower the pressure much. They just feel squishy when you get three or four pounds below recommended.

My rear's are on the softest setting and they are still hard,,I find myself weaving, ziggin, and zagging around all the bumps, holes, and cracks in the road,,not sure if somebody makes a softer shock but it would be nice,,I hear alot of complaints about the ride. The only way I would know to mod the shock is either use a different(softer)spring,,or take the shock apart and modify the piston porting,,that I have never done,,and it would only change your dampening and rebound. The spring really needs to be softer.

10-4 on the zigging, zagging & weaving. I expect to be pulled over one day for DUI. I haven't drank in 18 years, so no worries about that!

howdy, i found the softest setting was letting the shock bottom out and that was jarring the heck outa my already injured back. i set it up two notches and the ride was much softer. i just finnished a 960 mile round trip and it rode great.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

i dont ride after i drank even one beer, but i found if you let a slight bit of air out the tire it runs smoother on the bumps, hard tires = rough ride

Scooters are pretty light compared to the loads that they are designed to carry. My 325 lb bike is rated for a 460+ lb load and weighs in at over 800lbs when fully loaded so sometimes with a single person on it can ride a little rough.

I've tried to get insight into this issue for a long time. I weigh 240 and my rear suspension is bottomed out just by sitting on the scooter. I too weave around ruts and holes to avoid bottoming out, and bottoming out hard. My scoot (Vog 260) does not have adjustable shocks (I have the 2 shock model) so I've been toying with the idea with getting much stiffer springs that will still have some travel after I sit. They seem to cost a few hundred though, and I have no idea if it would work anyway. The closest answer I ever saw was to let some air out of the tires for a softer ride.

Hi you all , adjusted both shocks 3 clicks, adjusted tire to 28#, seems to help soften, the road jars, I have been experiencing. ;o

If you lower the tire pressure to soften the ride you can end up allowing too much sidewall flexing which generates heat and can cause rim damage along with a blowout. On the front tire it can cause feathered tread wear and head shake which can end up in a high side fall.

Guys wait. You are ALL riding on low profile tires. Of course it's going to be harsh. Next time you swap, check your clearances and try something in a taller profile!
Yes, this will somewhat affect the chinometer. Yes, this will give you somewhat higher effective gearing. Somewhat is relative to how much the overall Diameter increases with the swap.
Quick and dirty Tire Primer for those not familiar:
The typical format for tire sizes on bikes, cars, etc is:
AAA/BB-CC
Where: AAA is the Width in Millimeters BB is the Aspect Ratio or percentage the Height is of the Width CC is the RIM Diameter in Inches
Example:
A tire of size 120/60-13 120mm Wide 72mm Tall (120 * 0.60 = 72) fits on 13" Diameter Rim
A tire of size 120/80-13 120mm Wide 96mm Tall (120 * 0.80 = 96) fits on 13" Diameter Rim
Quick Application:
96mm - 72mm = 24mm 13 / 2 = 6.5 6.5 * 25.4 = 165 (rounded) 165 + 72 = 237 165 + 96 = 261 2 * Pi * Radius = Diameter 2 * Pi * 237 = 1489 2 * Pi * 261 = 1640 1489 / 1640 = .91 (rounded)
If someone made this swap, he'd need 24mm of extra clearance. and he would expect his chinometer to indicate approximately 9% percent slower for the same actual speed.
