Hi guys, I am that guy always telling you to use all the gear all the time. You may feel like a goof ball with full riding gear on when you are on the scooter but the pavement hits just as hard at 50mph whether you fall from a scooter or a Harley. Going down the highway today a dump truck going the other direction did not have his load covered. As I passed the truck I hit a wall of rocks. They chipped the paint on my bike, helmet, broke my headlight, and left welts on my chest! Had I had my riding jacket on I would have been fine. But if I was only using a skill cap or 1/2 helmet with no shield I may have went down. The pain from the rocks hitting my chest made my eyes water. I can only imagine if that was my face. Here is a photo of one of the welts about an hr. later.

Ouch. Good advice. I went for a ride many years ago with out my jacket and left a nipple on the road that day. I wear full gear always now everyday every ride. Sucks you had to experience that hopefully your story keeps someone else from a similar experience. Sucks about the bike though too did you get an opportunity to speak with the truck driver?
BTW I know you're wondering yes my nipple grew back but it is way too sensitive now...

Ouch. did you get an opportunity to speak with the truck driver? Not yet. The state patrol found the truck and let me know what the name of the company is. I plan on calling them in the morning.

Would this be the appropriate place to call the truck driver a "rockhead"? Or to observe you had a rocky day? Hey, come on...stop throwing rocks at me!

i know this one all to well. from a couple experiances. first one was going around a corner i had gone around quite a few times but the one time i didn't have my gear on besides my brain bucket (always wore that) and of all things was in shorts i come around it and in the middle a small rut had formed. My back tire caught the rut causing the bike to jump then do a side tumble throwing me about 15 or so feet. this was a chip & tar road so shoulder ground bloody, hip ground bloody knees banged up with road rash. if i hadn't had my full face helmet on i would be missing the right side of my face since it was the first to land and slide before the rest of me. Needless to say always wore full gear after that.
Second story, Was riding down a nice back country road running about 40-45mph when bammm right in the chest a big ole june beattle hit me, felt like a baseball even through my leather, had to stop and catch my breath but could only imagine what would have happened without the padding of the jacket.
Wearing full gear always a great idea and a lot less painful

The unexpected does happen. My brother on a 50cc moped did not think he needed any gear until one day riding on a cobble stone street he got caught in a railroad switch that allowed freight cars to be delivered between the buildings and was closed in his direction which pinched the front wheel sending him over the handle bars and face first onto the cobblestones with no helmet, gloves or jacket. He was lucky to live through that event and have no permanent scars on his face afterwards. The bike needed the streering head straightened, new forks/tree, controls, instruments, front tire, axle and rim. Even just a helmet and gloves would have eliminated a whole world of hurt. He has not ridden since that off 40 years ago.
