I made the mistake of letting a friend borrow my bike to make a trip out of town to buy a scooter. It was starting to get dark by the time he got back into town. My bike's head and tail lights are not functioning properly, so I had some high quality bicycle lights mounted to it till I could repair the lights. Well, my friend never turned them on, and he got pulled over. Instead of just explaining the situation to the cop, he decided to mouth off and have an attitude. The cop gave him a $125 ticket for riding a moped without lights, and he almost impounded my bike. He told my friend to tell me that if he saw the bike on the road without properly functioning lights he would impound it and take whoever was riding it to jail. He said the bicycle lights would no longer be good enough. I immediately borrowed some money from a friend and got all the stuff to repair the lights. As frustrating as it was, I know the cop was right. It's still an equipment violation that had to be fixed.

Good attitude to have even if your choice of friends might not be... I meant friend. All the cop was trying to do is look out for the safety of the rider and others. Good that you got all the stuff needed to fix the lights. You done good, your friend? well $125 for a smart mouth.......

>:(What sucks about it is, He basically painted a very large target on your ride. Maybe thats a blessing in a way, because i'm sure you will now make sure it is in ship- shape at all times, and ready for inspection

I agree. I let a friend ride my GS500 up the road and back and he guns the gas while riding by me and wrecks the bike. Put a nasty scrape on his arm too. He wanted to get a bike before. After, not so much lol

Never ever let someone else ride your scooter, motorcycle or drive your car. You'll always get ripped off or worse. If they wreck out, you lost your vehicle, and they will invariably want you to pay the medical costs plus. Another scenario I saw was where someone let someone else use their car and they ran a bunch of stop lights (they have those stoplight cameras out here all over the place), plus parking tickets too. Anyway the owner got pulled over because a cop ran the plates and found warrants out for their arrest for unpaid tickets. The "friend" neglected to tell her, and she went to jail for the whole holiday and got stuck with all of the fines. It was a holiday and her kids were home too but someone took care of them for her.
So you can wind up without a vehicle and still get sued for damages and the insurance company won't pay up either. Then your so called friend just says sorry and bails on you leaving you holding the bag.

I definitely learned some lessons here about not letting other people ride my moped, and keeping my bike maintained properly.

Thankfully Florida will go after the friend if you drop the dime on them. There is even an affidavite on the Red Light Cam Tickets to declare that someone else was driving the vehicle that will get the heat off you if you identify the driver who had your vehicle.
Bottom line lend them the money to get a rental or chauffer them but don't hand over the keys.

I've gotten burned by multiple people, friends and family, financially I mean. That guy who wrecked my GS never paid for the mirrors replacement, and I had bars that were bent after that.. Its very hard to get paid back anything these days... Argo, I do not let friends or family even ride my stuff.. I've never had my scooter down, period. And I hope to keep it that way, knock on wood
