What happened alley, the valves just get loose all of a sudden?

Check the kill switch. When I was a young hooligan punk we used to like to turn peoples kill switches off at any opportunity. Might be the valves but, it might just be the kill switch is in the off position...

That's a very good theory and can easily happen to a Chinese scooter. But the Tomos Nitro 150's engine is made by SYM, not your typical low quality metal found on a Chinese GY6. SYM engines usually go quite a few miles before needing a valve clearance adjustment. That being said, the OP has 5200 miles and if the valves have never been done or only done once, they could be the culprit.

I just got the scoot back today it has been in storage till I got a chance to deal with it.
The shop I called suggested the valve clearance is out of wack...now that I think about it I heard a clattering noise before it stopped running, and I lost power on accelleration, but it didn't sound like it was from the engine, more like the variator under the side cover.

Either way the shop told me if I pop off that cover and both nuts are on the valve adjusters then I should just be able to re-adjust and get back on the road. I'm hoping that's the case. Knowing my luck both nuts are gone and have fell down inside the engine and have tore something else up.

Just an F.Y.I SYM has some of their products made in China for the cheaper labor. Actually many of your brand scoots have China factories making their stuff, Honda, Vespa, Yamaha just to name a few. But some control the quality and material they use, that is the difference, so better material the price goes up.

The Tomos Nitro is assembled in a mainland China based factory. This is to bring down the price using cheap labor. Quality control follows the same strict guidelines that SYM scooters assembled in Taiwan use. The mechanical and electrical components are Taiwanese made, including small things like fasteners, bearings, hoses and rubber components. The finish/paint on the plastics seems a bit cheaper, but still decent.

Is it as good as a Honda made in Japan (not all Honda's are exclusively made in Japan these days)? Probably not, but it's as close as one can get and cut the price down almost 50% without significantly degrading durability and reliability.

Almost a Chinese price without cutting corners on lower quality metals and mechanical components that always lower durability and reliability.

I have owned and wrenched on Chinese scooters as well as Taiwanese and Japanese scooters/motorcycles. The Taiwanese machines assembled in China are not like typical Chinese manufactured products!

I probably sound like a broken record by now... But spending a few extra hundred bucks on a budget Taiwanese scooter assembled in China (Kymco Agility 125, Lance Cali Classic 125, Tomos Nitro 150 and a few others) is a much better deal than the best Chinese scooter at any price and saves you money!

Getting back to the topic at hand. There are instructional videos for valve adjustments on a GY6 engine that will make it possible for an inexperienced scooter owner to handle the job themselves.
