That's just crazy. What did they say the fair market value of your scooter was? Also, what kind do you ride? Hi desmerwebb. My scoot is a 2009 CFmoto Fashion. I payed $950 for it. Notarized bill of sale. State of Ga. said fair market value of my scoot is $2300 . My point is Ga. could have said $3999. fair market value of scooter. I know that people who buy cheep car 2 or 3 thousand are being appraised at 5,6,7 or 8 Thousand fair market value of said car. Sounds arbitrary to me & for sure a great money maker for state. Just think if I sell it to you & then you go register it. The state is going to charge you the same fair market value of $2300. X 6.5%. See with old valorem tax if I pay it this year then sell to you. You don't cause tax is paid for this year. Dave

We bought a Honda Civic Hybrid a couple years ago that had some problems, paid $7000, as stated on the Bill of Sale and the Tennessee Transfer of Title also includes purchase price (probably for their taxes). Our state said we had to pay Highway Use Tax on FMV of $14,900. I think not North Carolina, we appealed their assessment with several quotes for repairs (at a Stealership to get the highest estimate possible!!!) and won. Nearly $200 in tax savings... whew. The main reason I just have 50cc class bikes is because they require absolutely no DMV interaction or fees whatsoever.

You dont need to register 50 cc's in florida. Yes in Florida a sub 50cc scooter requires a moped registration if it has 2 hp or less and can go no faster than 30 mph on level ground however if it is 50cc or over or more than 2hp or can go over 30 mph on level ground it is registered as a motor cycle. If it requires registration it needs a title. As for Florida State sales tax it is 5% however each County has their own additional bit they add to it and they are capped to only the first $1,000 or $1,500 of the sale and then the rest of the purchase only has State sales tax applied to it. If you are going to flip the bike you do not register or title it and just fill out the second tranfer line on the title document stub the original owner signed over to you. Some restrictions apply. For Registration info see: www.dmv.org/fl-florida/other-types.php#Scooters

That is awful.. Most States don't require registration on a 49cc scooter. In Missouri, a person could buy a 49cc scooter without registerating it, get to operate without insurance. It is classified as a motorized bicycle. It only requires a car drivers license to operate. It is a vehicle and must obey laws of road- and can operate a 49cc scooter on State highway. Must stay in right of lane to allow traffic to pass safely.. Attachments:

scooter12 It's pretty much the same in Ga. Most people who get DUI's will buy them to ride till they get there drivers license back from state. Because cops don't pull them over unless there doing more than 30mph. But you still need a valid drivers licence to be legal. Dave

Ya, it looks bad, if he lives in a State that requires registering and insuring. It is because, having no insurance, usually put one in the wrong no matter what. It might mean suspension of drivers license- court cost too. But like on my 250 scoot, I would never ride without insurance nor proper registration or updated permit.

Registration, licensing and titling is a protection for everyone. Stolen is only good to someone who skirts the law as you can't register it without the title here.

So true, So true. Also wonderful revenue generator for your state, county & city Government. yep, now take that thought one step further... where do you think that money goes? over inflated corporate contracts & interest...of course a little goes to education and public assistance but the bulk of it fills the billionaires pocket. i'm so happy my money is going to a good cause.
