I went outside the box every time until the actual test that counted. On the final run while the instructor was watching, I made a perfect figure-8. I had never ridden a street bike or anything with a clutch before and I still breezed through the course. At home the first evening, my legs started cramping from walking a bike all day so I downed a cup of pickle juice... No more cramps!

Nice! When my Jonway kicks the bucket, I would like to find a good deal on a Majesty to replace it. Extra CC would be nice with the highway riding I do... only thing I don't like is the lack of a trunk box, but I understand that they make up for it with other amenities...

Scootering on the freeway:
In the before times (before I was a scooter rider myself):
I hate driving in Houston; traffic is always horrible. I'm a country boy and like me some personal space on the road. But, I had the misfortune of driving through Houston on I45 at rush hour. Traffic is the quintessential bumper-to-bumber @ ~70mph across all lanes. We overtake and pass a guy on a scooter, who is obviously riding at top speed, at about 55-60mph. A red flat-floorboard scoot with big wheels, not sure what it was. Made me cringe just thinking about trying that...

Hey Leo, like the pic of your scoot... is that your new BIG trunk box or your original smaller one? That looks just like the one I installed on my scooter this afternoon, to replace my broken factory trunk. It holds my full face helmet without a lot of of room to spare. I'm planning to get an LED light strip to install behind the reflector to wire a third brake light...

Well, as it turns out, I was slight over optimistic on my power savings; The instrument cluster lights on my scooter are 3-watt instead of the standard 5-watt. Also, there are only three instead of four. But still, I reduced power from 12W to ~1W buy installing the LED bulbs. The biggest dissappointment was the cluster signal and high beam indicator bulbs. I had purchased green and blue T10 emitter to replace those, but after tearing the entire cluster down, I found that it was a much smaller wedge-base bulb. I really want to bump up the brightness of the signal indicator lamps as I still forget to turn the signal off from time to time. Also not cool, I had purchased a replacement set of automotive style BA20D bulbs to install, but on doing so, I discovered that the replacement bulbs were rotated by degrees so my low beams would have been narrow beams instead. One of my factory bulbs has failed on the low beam so I have to order another replacement set and hope I get the right orientation. And then, completely tear down the front end of the bike again to replace those. :-(

At first I considered removing the windshield. However, now that it's cold, I find the big GIVI is a lifesaver on the old face AND HANDS. The doggone thing actually WORKS! I'm now riding the scooter, instead of wasting gas in the car, if it's only 50 degrees or warmer. In more than a half-century of riding, this is the first bike I've had that could be ridden comfortably without gloves, or scarf below 60 degrees! I actually bought a sheet of Lexan to attempt making a cut-down windshield for my scooter earlier in the year, but never got started on that project. Now that it's winter, I wish I could manufacture a larger windshield for more wind deflection! Come spring, I'm going to give the cut down windshield a shot. If that works, I may buy a larger sheet someday and try to make a winter windshield... I've still been riding my scooter as much as possible this winter, but once it gets down to the low thirties, I'm going for the truck keys. Most days, if the forecast says it's going to get up in the upper forties or near fifty, I'll just bundle up and tough it out on the scooter. Unless it's a cloudy/wintery/windy day. Down in the twenties, forget it! Bundling up: Earplugs first - no telling how many times I get about half-way through and realize I forgot. Ninja Mask next... Goes over my head, covers my ears, keeps my warm breath against my face, reduces fogging, fits inside jacket to keep my neck covered. Next is the under-jacket, a fleece pullover that's zipped all the way my neck. Then the Leather over-jacket, zipped up tight with the flap snapped shut to keep the wind out of the zipper. Helmet next, but I always forget and put my gloves on first and and can't buckle the chin strap. Finally, the gloves; mine are fairly warm and insulated, but they aren't airtight so they could be better. I would like some insulated coveralls for my legs, but I can generally get by. Oh, and no way I am ever getting on the freeway! Not even in the warm summertime! It's bad enough on the highways I ride; when I pass through some trees and get blasted from the side by a strong wind gust coming across a field with no blocking... Rounding a curve with semi breezing past in the other direction and trying to fight gusts in the lean... And leaning like a boss on a straightaway because of a strong side-wind... Forget about WOT in city interstate traffic... I hate doing that in the car; forget about it on a scooter!

Yesterday, I received a package containing the last of the LED bulbs I need to have my scooter completely converted over to LED (except for the headlights of course). My 244cc Jonway YY250T (Roketa MC 54 clone) scoot uses the following bulbs: - 5W T10 bulbs for the Front Running lights, Instrument Cluster, and License Plate
- 1156-base for both the Front and Rear Turn Signals
- 1157-base for the Brake/Tail Lights
You can't always trust the advertised specs on the LED bulbs so last night, I measured power draw on each style I ordered. Only counting the Always-On bulbs (Tail-Light/Instrument Cluster/License Plate), I will be reducing power draw by ~65W by replacing the factory bulbs with LED! That's 5A less load on the charging system. Now, what should I do next? I can replace the factory 35W bulbs with a set of compatible automotive-style 50-55W bulbs if the plastic housing and reflector can handle the extra heat... And I would still have surplus power left over!

Odd about speed ratings, I bought Shinko SR429s for my 250 and they were advertised as J-rated for 62mph on one site but L-rated (75mph) on another. Fortunately, they actually were 75mph rated which is over the limit on the roads I ride on so well suited for me. I stay off the Interstate entirely and stick to lower speeds anyway as much as possible. My factory tires were K-rated (68mph) so probably border-line unsuitable for me...

Hey Alleyoop! Yes, that's the video I've been watching to get the process down for the valve adjustment. I hope that it works out that easy on my scoot...
My fuel economy has gone down from ~73mpg to ~65mpg. I hadn't noticed any tapping until yesterday afternoon. I still don't have any issues running at highway speed, but since it seems to have lost some pep off the line, I'm assuming valves are at fault. All the symptoms just seem to fit in line with the mileage. Cold weather just hit again so I'm back in the truck; Saturday should be a good time to hole up in the garage and get the valves adjusted.

I've been riding my Jonway YY250T since August, and have about 4300 miles on it. Not sure it it's related or just in my head, but lately, it's seemed a bit slower when taking off. I thought maybe I was just more used to riding the scooter so it just didn't seem as quick. I always wear earplugs when riding, so I'm not able to hear a lot of the quieter sounds. This afternoon, I rode into town, about a 10-mile ride, mostly at highway speed, so the motor had time to fully warm up. I stopped briefly at one location, removed my earplugs, and didn't put them back in when I left since I was just going to the other side of the block. When I reached my destination, without the earplugs, I was able to hear the valves tapping at idle once stopped. Not sure if this is related, but my fuel economy seems to have dropped a bit as well (nothing drastic). I've been gassing up at other stations so I didn't know if it was the fuel or if I'm just driving more aggressively since I'm used to the scooter?? So... reduced performance, valves tapping, a few thousand miles on the scoot, sounds like valves to me! The scooter has the 244cc motor, so adjustment should be a breeze. (Motor running and at full operating temp, loosen screw, adjust until tapping stops, tighten screw, and drive away). We'll see how it all goes!

Jonway YY250T (244cc, Roketa MC54/Reflex clone): Will hold a half-helmet under the seat, but not much more. I keep my laptop backpack case under the seat packed with a spare jacket inside, but that leaves no room for anything else. Any serious storage needs the trunk box.

I have the Jonway YY250T with the large trunk box, that I use extensively. The large box was a big reason why I selected this particular scooter. As usual with this box/scooter combo, the box has always rattled badly. When I installed the box, I used rubber washers in an attempt to dampen some of the vibration, but apparently, that didn't help. I was examining it the other day and noted several large cracks in the base of the box, extending from the rear mounting holes. These cracks were fairly severe, extending 2-3 inches in each direction. First off, I bought the bike to SAVE $$$, so I'm not springing for a Givi; I'm just cheap like that! Since I like the size of the trunk (except for the fact that it won't hold my full-face helmet), my initial plan is to attempt to repair it by bedding the interior with fiberglass fabric/resin: www.amazon.com/Bondo-422-Fiberglass-Resin-Repair/dp/B000BO7CVK/I've used this stuff before and know that it is durable and very easy to apply. Also, bedding the interior would allow me to add some reinforcement at the base to dampen and minimize vibration. But, this would also be a good opportunity for me to upgrade the trunk. I've looked around a bit and found some "Universal" trunks that seem like they might be decent for around $50 shipped: www.amazon.com/Universal-Motorcycle-Scooter-Touring-Luggage/dp/B004IAC3ZS/...and this "Bestem" branded box for about $ : www.amazon.com/dp/B001O79DHY/I would like something a bit more rugged than the flimsy factory box to minimize a lot of the rattling. Size is a big factor as I sometimes have to carry tools or some PC gear between sites. I have a backpack case for carrying a laptop, so the trunk is mostly for tools, small peripherals, accessories, etc. I don't carry passengers so an integrated backrest isn't required. Ideally, a replacement would be big enough for me to stash my full-face helmet, but that's not essential. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding any of these Universal aftermarket trunks? Are they junk (i.e., worse than the factory case)? Anyone know of any particularly good value trunks? If not, I'm going for the fiberglass mat and resin kit...

Is that the same as the BA20D bulb?
What I've read is that the best option for the Roketa-style scoots is to use the H4 style bulb, then splice H4 connectors into the wiring harness. The H4 bulbs are supposed to fit the scooter housing without any modifications.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong? I'm planning one of these upgrades in the near future myself...
