Great. I'll look at those videos. I took the jets out and cleaned them a bit but my pilot jet seems clogged lengthwise. Like hard as a rock.

Generic 50cc Chinese scooter, GY6. After sitting in the shed a few years it's not wanting to idle. I'm sure the carb needs a cleaning and it's probably the problem, but before I pull it I noticed a broken hose. Is this just emissions garbage? It being disconnected, shouldnt cause it to run differently should it? I attached the pic but im not seeing it... it's located here: imgur.com/a/LWLmi

Would backfiring through the carb do this?

Not to derail your post or your efforts (and I'm new here) but has anyone ever used Portawalls? They have them in 10" for $48. I'm assuming they're sold for cars at that size so a 'set' would be enough for two bikes.
I was into VW's a long time ago and they were the shiz for putting whitewalls on your Beetle.

If it's running lean, would that add to the problem? I plug chopped it once, the plug looked lean. It's been too busy here to fiddle with it more.

I checked the needle last night and it only has one groove in it with a washer and the clip in that one groove. I was able to move the washer from on top to below the clip, but that only netted me a half millimeter or so. Any other advice for raising it? Just find a tiny washer and slide the needle through it, even though it won't seat anywhere?

Ok, so the scooter has almost 500 miles on it. We've put 20 on it since we bought it and last night I gave it our first oil change.
Judging by the condition of the oil and the trash I found, I'd guess it was it's ONLY oil change. There's the plug, then the spring, then the screen. In the plug's little bowl I found some metal shavings and bits and pieces of what look to be gasket material.
Is my little treasure hunt result normal of first time Chinese scooter oil changes? I have no idea what gasket would have ended up in the oil, but luckily it was finally cleared out.

Eh, I am capable of doing crazy things, but I tend to be a stickler for rules. Especially when its my wife riding it. If she gets busted doing 40 on a scooter that's only allowed to do 30, I don't want her being ticketed.
Oh, and I'll be on my motorcycle so her '50cc' scooter keepin up with me may look.... odd.
